Important Information - School Support Staff Pay and Conditions

Support staff have a crucial part to play in helping maintain the momentum of school reform. Deploying more support staff in schools, developing new roles and broadening their range of responsibilities has helped teachers focus on teaching and made a difference in their workload. In recognition of their key role, support staff desere to have fair and more consistent pay and conditions of employment.

Last September, ministers announced their intention to introduce a new Negotiating Body to set up a National pay and conditions framework for all support staff employed in maintained schools in England. More information:

Job Descriptions In schools only

The existing LA model job description has been revised in collaboration with CSF Human Resources Department to reflect the increased responsibilities of teaching assistants. There are now six levels of support assistant posts and three Special Needs support assistant posts and each has been assigned an appropriate pay grade, by the Hay panel.

Schools are encouraged to review job descriptions in light of the above. They are discretionary, however, as is the use of titles. The cost of re-grading would need to be found from within school budgets.

Further queries relating to job descriptions can be addressed to the personnel administrator attached to your school.
