Introduction

HLTAs are experienced teaching assistants who plan and deliver learning activities under the direction of a teacher and assess, record and report on pupils' progress. They may also manage other classroom-based staff or may supervise a class in a teacher's absence. Approximately half the schools in Hertfordshire benefit from the increased capacity that an HLTA brings.

"Although HLTA is a status rather than a qualification, HLTAs are seen as having skills and knowledge that represent a progression from the level 3 qualifications." Training and Development Agency for Schools
