Recruiting Newly Qualified Teachers

Hertfordshire has a strong history of recruiting Newly Qualified Teachers. Our training and support programme is well thought of throughout the teaching profession and in September 2005, 750 NQTs joined our schools.

The statutory induction period applies to all newly qualified teachers NQTs who have qualified since 7 May 1999. The induction period combines an individualised programme of monitoring and support, which provides opportunities for NQTs to develop further their knowledge and skills, with an assessment of their performance. In order to complete the induction period satisfactorily, all NQTs must demonstrate that they have met all of the Induction Standards and that they have continued to meet the Standards for the Award of Qualified Teacher Status on a consistent basis in an employment context. Details of the induction arrangements have been issued in the form of DfEE Guidance 90/2000 containing the Secretary of State's Guidance on: The Induction Period For Newly Qualified Teachers. To support the implementation of the statutory induction arrangements, the TDA (Training and Development Agency) has published a set of Induction Support Materials.

In Hertfordshire the Induction of NQTs is managed by a member of the Standards and School Effectiveness Division. All induction tutors receive a personal handbook and are offered training. All NQTs also receive a personal handbook and are offered a vast range of training opportunities both in our first class Education Centre and in venues around the LA.

NQT Registration - Online

Schools must register their NQTs online with the SSE division in order to release funding for their support.

The first step is for each school wishing to register an NQT to nominate an NQT Induction Co-ordinator who can be the Head, Deputy or person in charge of NQTs. This person will then be authorised by the LA to access the NQT site and maintain the confidentiality of NQT records. An NQT Co-ordinator can then register any further NQT Tutors who will need access to the site.

The NQT Co-ordinator needs to log on to http://nqt.teachinherts.com and complete the form on the home page. Once the form has been completed, press the "save details" button. It is important that the co-ordinators include their e-mail address as their authorisation will be confirmed by e-mail. Once they have received that authorisation they will have access to the site to register NQTs and induction tutors.

Guidelines to using the NQT website are available in Help Documents (see menu on home page). If you have any problems/concerns please call the NQT Admin office on 01438 844755 /844902 .
