Getting started

The Hertfordshire Grid for Learning web team have put together a few simple guidelines on this page to help you get started with a school web site.

Introduction

The school web site is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate some of your pupils' work with the whole world. When designing a web site for your school, the most important things to consider are what you would like to say about your school and who you are aiming the site at. We can help you to produce a simple home page with the hope that you will go on to use the site as far more than just an electronic version of your school prospectus.

Your school web site address

Every school in Hertfordshire already has its own web site address or 'domain name'. These addresses are in the form:

www.schoolname.herts.sch.uk

For schools that have not yet developed a web site, their web address carries a simple message saying "Web Site coming soon..."

Many Herts schools have now taken ownership of their web site. In some schools a teacher has developed the site in others parents, governors or ex-pupils have taken up the challenge. Some school web sites are run by the school computer club.

Producing a simple home page for HGfL

Your school might want to start by developing a simple home page to replace the 'web site coming soon...' message.
To do this you might want to include information such as:

  • the school name;
  • a photo of your school;
  • your a school motto or a quote from the headteacher;
  • full contact address;
  • the school crest/shield/colours;
  • a link to Hertfordshire Grid for Learning / the BBC / GridClub etc.
  • space for links to other pages.

Take a look at what other schools have achieved by browsing through the list of Hertfordshire Schools online.

Web Site Courses

A number of subsidised training courses run each term to help schools in Hertfordshire create and develop their web sites.
