Sample Images
Here are some images which might be considered for inclusion on a school
web site. Alongside each image we have included some comments and, where
appropropriate, relevant links.
Note that these images (excluding the final two) were not
taken from school web sites, but adapted from other images found on the
Internet.
Individual
Child 1
Issues with this image:
This image is small, quick to load and clear. However, the child
concerned is easily identifiable and the resolution of the image
is such that it could be digitally manipulated into another format
or in conjunction with another image. |
 Individual
Child 2 & 3
Issues with these images:
At first these images appears very small and it appears that there
is no potential for digital manipulation.
However, the actual size of the images differs from the size that
they are displayed on the page, allowing anyone who downloads them
to see a much larger image.
- Click on either of these images to see their actual size (use
your browser's Back button when you have seen
it)

Group
of Children 1
Issues with this image:
- Need to ensure that each child in picture has not had permission
withdrawn via permission letter
- If one of the children has had permission withdrawn and is at
one edge of the photograph, then the image can be cropped and
still used
- If the child who has had permission withdrawn and is in the
centre of the photograph, then the photograph effectively becomes
unusable - even if the child in question is masked or removed
in some way:
| Usable |
Potentially Unusable |
 |
 |
 |
Image cropped |
Child blurred digitally |
Child removed digitally |

Group
of Children 2
Issues with this image:
This type of group photograph would be good for illustrating a
class's page or a part of the web site celebrating the achievements
of a sports team. There are a number of issues associated with this
sort of image, many of them stemming from the fact that it has been
taken with a digital camera.
- The image has been inserted in the web page at the same size
that the camera captured it and then 'shrunk' to fit on the page.
This means that although the image appears smaller it is in fact
still 'full size' - click
here to see how big the image really is.
- Due to the large size of this image, it effectively becomes
a series of individual images,
each of which can be extracted from the main image
- The image should be resized to a suitable size (for example
400 pixels wide, rather than the current 1436 pixels wide).

School Details 1 & 2

Issues with these images:
- Images such as these give any visitor to your web site a complete
overview of the school
- These plans can create issues around child protection ("Here
are the boys changing rooms... here is an external door next to
them")
- Some schools choose to publish plans of near-architectural detail
giving information about doors, windows, fire exits and other
access points
- If you published this information showing the location of your
ICT suite and subsequently equipment was stolen from the ICT suite
during a break-in, would your school's insurers look kindly on
the fact that you published this sort of information?
