Incorporating PowerPoint presentationsWhy would you use PowerPoint presentations as part of your web site?Powerpoint presentations are often created by pupils as part of work in ICT or in other areas of the curriculum as an application of ICT. If one of the aims of your school web site is to share or celebrate your pupils' work, then publishing their PowerPoint presentations can be an efficient way of achieving this. Important Note: Safety ConsiderationsBear in mind that whatever is contained within a PowerPoint presentation will be visible on the Internet once you publish it on your school web site. It is always a valuable exercise to go through material you are going to publish (such as PowerPoint presentations) and do some appropriate 'anonymisation' - such as removing surnames of pupils and any inappropriate images before you publish such information. What are the options for working with PowerPoint presentations? There are two methods - each is illustrated below with examples from school web sites:
Method 1: Save the PowerPoint presentation as HTML
PowerPoint 97
PowerPoint 2000
The advantage of this method is that people need only to have an Internet browser to be able to see the presentation, so they do not need PowerPoint or the PowerPoint viewer. The disadvantages of this method are that you need to upload a number of files in order to allow other people to see the presentation, plus things like sound and animation do not work properly, if they work at all. Method 2: Upload the PowerPoint fileThe second method is to upload the Powerpoint .ppt file - that is, upload the PowerPoint file that has been created on your computer. After doing this, you create a link on a web page to the .ppt file. When someone clicks on the link, they can download the file or view it in Internet Explorer. The advantage of this is that the file will display exactly as it does in PowerPoint - including any sounds and animations. You need only to upload a single .ppt file in order to make the presentation available. The disadvantage is that the person viewing the file needs to have the appropriate version of PowerPoint installed on their computer in order to view the presentation. Some features from newer version (such as PowerPoint 2000 or XP) will not be viewable in an older version such as PowerPoint 97.
