Young Engineers
Clubs create an environment in which students can extend and enhance
curriculum work through the benefit of active learning. The structure
allows students to enter a world in which they use their initiative,
develop an ability to think around problems and develop good communication
skills. The young engineers learn to work as team members on major projects
- developing an understanding of engineering, industry and enterprise,
and also the six key skills now an essential part of school curriculum.

Advice for Practitioners on
legal background and other issues
Last week
the DfES published for use by all those with an interest in partnerships
between schools and colleges. The main focus for the advice centres on
the ‘Increased Flexibility for 14-16 Yea Olds’ programme. The document
is aimed at providing guidance to address some of the concerns about key
areas of flexibility at Key Stage 4 including:

- Child Protection: Vetting Arrangements for Staff and Volunteers

- Reporting Attendance
- Extended Work Experience/Placements
- Health and Safety

Guidance for managers in schools
and their partners in the community
This guidance
was published in Autumn 2002 and provides schools, colleges and their
partners with guidance on developing vocational and work-related learning
at Key Stage 4. The policy statement from the Government set out in 14-19
opportunity and excellence published in January 2003 notifies
schools that Work Related Learning will become statutory for all pupils
entering Key Stage 4 from September 2004. The guidance is extremely important,
therefore, and if you do not have not the document you are advised to
do so as early as possible. Copies of the document can be ordered from
