Services for Academies

We want to help you to create a School Library to be proud of, which is

• accessible to all
• appealing and attractive
• easy to use
• a fun space for enjoying books and reading
• designed to have a positive impact on learning

Advice and Support

Our team of librarians can

• assess your library as a ‘critical friend’
• recommend curriculum materials
• recommend materials to broaden horizons through reading for pleasure
• provide advocacy for the library’s role with senior staff
• help you ensure the library is a central hub for information and learning throughout the school

• ensure your students have the skills required to use the library
• advise on library refurbishment
• advise on library automation

For Secondary Academies we provide

Continuing Professional Development

We offer half termly meetings for school librarians to

• network with other library professionals
• share good practice
• discuss developments in libraries and reading

• keep own professional development up to date

CPD members also have access to the SLS professional collection

Training and Events

Our extensive training and events programme provides

• inspirational talks from award winning authors and illustrators
• reader development events
• a wide variety of training from external experts
• free parking

Short Loans

Enhance your stock provision with materials from

• the Hertfordshire Public Library catalogue
• SLS Secondary stock (including Young Adult fiction)

• Inter Library Loans – from libraries throughout the world.
• free delivery to and from school

Curriculum Support

We can help your school library support the curriculum by providing you with

• non-fiction project packs (a collection of books on a particular topic on a six week loan)
• Reading Group Packs (a set of same title books on a six week loan)
• information searches (our librarians can research a topic on your behalf)

For Primary Academies we provide

A Mobile Library

From our mobile library you can

• choose from over 4000 books on your doorstep in an exciting environment
• involve children and staff in the selection process
• purchase pre-selected, high quality, shelf-ready books
• receive up to 15% discount on purchases
• select a time to suit you

Training and Events

Our extensive training and events programme provides

• inspirational talks from award winning children’s authors and illustrators
• literature related activities designed for teachers and children
• a wide variety of training from external experts
• free parking

Reading for Enjoyment and Reading Group packs

Why not supplement your own resources with some of ours?

• SLS Reading for Enjoyment packs provide a fresh collection of reading materials for each class every term
• Reading Group packs enable you to run a book group in school without having to purchase multiple copies of a title 

Special Collections

Our special collections give you access to a wide range of material in difficult to resource areas of stock

• the Dual and Foreign Language collection represents more than 60 languages
• our Visually Impaired collection can supply audio materials or large or giant print books (up to 36 point type)
• free weekly delivery and collection is included

Membership of the Schools Library Service for Primary Schools starts from £295 but services can be accessed on a pay as you use basis. Please contact us for further details.
