The Reading Agency

The Reading Agency is an independent charity with a mission to inspire more people to read more. It runs a number of high profile national initiatives such as the Summer Reading Challenge.

Chatterbooks

Chatterbooks is a national network of reading groups for children, coordinated by The Reading Agency

Booktrust 

The independent charity Booktrust manages a number of book prizes and awards, including The Blue Peter Book Awards and The Roald Dahl Funny Prize. It also administers Children’s Book Week and is responsible for book gifting schemes such as Bookstart and Booked Up.

National Literacy Trust

The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity that transforms lives through literacy by supporting those who struggle with literacy and the people who work with them.

Awards and Events

Carnegie Greenaway

The Carnegie Medal and the Kate Greenaway Medal are awarded for outstanding writing and illustration, respectively, in books for children and young people.

The Red House Children’s Book Award

The Red House Children’s Book Award is the only national children's book award to be completely decided by children themselves. It is coordinated by the Federation of Children's Book Groups.

World Book Day

World Book Day is a partnership of publishers, booksellers and interested parties who work together to promote books and reading for the personal enrichment and enjoyment of all.

Children’s Book Week

Children’s Book Week is an annual celebration of reading for pleasure for children of primary school age. It is administered by Booktrust.

National Poetry Day

National Poetry Day takes place annually on the Thursday of Children’s Book Week in October.

Children’s Laureate

The role of Children's Laureate is awarded once every two years to an eminent writer or illustrator of children's books to celebrate outstanding achievement in their field. The present Children’s Laureate is Julia Donaldson.

This is a very useful UK site on children’s literature, with regularly updated book news, exclusive interviews, book reviews and much, much more.

Mrs Mad’s Book-a-rama

Mrs Mad’s is a nutty site including a bookfinder and lots of reviews. If you are stuck for something to read, try here for ideas.

Reading Matters

There are lots of quite detailed reviews on this site. One particularly good feature of the site is the “other books to try” section after each review.

Whichbook

Of potential interest to teachers, librarians and sixth-formers, this site aims to introduce readers to new (adult) books and authors using a sophisticated search tool.

Books for Keeps

Books for Keeps is an online independent children’s book magazine. This website includes over 12,500 reviews and more than 2,000 articles including interviews with top children’s authors and illustrators.

The Word Pool

Aimed at adults, the Word Pool includes lots of reviews, booklists, author profiles, links and even help for potential children’s authors.
