Planning a Book WeekBooks should be celebrated all year round, but devoting a special week to them can focus the whole school’s attention and create a real buzz about reading. Most schools planning a book week opt to tie it in with a national or international event such as World Book Day in March or Children’s Book Week in October, but any week that suits the school is fine. You can be as inventive as you like: introduce your pupils to books from your childhood; read to someone else’s class; put up a display of your staff’s favourite books and see whether the children can guess who chose what; take the children to visit the local library; get members of the local community to come in and read stories with the children; arrange a library treasure hunt; the list goes on… Finding an author or illustratorIf you have a specific person in mind, try looking on their web page – most will tell you how to make a booking. The following sites have databases of authors, illustrators and storytellers who will come into schools for book weeks and other events: National Centre for Language and LiteracyThis website contains the NCLL “looking for an author” database. Apples and SnakesThe Apples and Snakes organization promotes performance poetry via schools and communities. National Association of Writers in EducationThe NAWE web page has links to their directory of authors who are willing to visit schools.
