NQTs and SEN/Inclusion Courses

The SEN Advisory Team, with the Adviser for Gifted and Talented, offer a 2-day Primary and 1-day Secondary course, each Spring term, in order to support NQTs to develop good inclusive practice, through addressing the Achievement and Diversity standards (9: 18 – 21).  This CPD is repeated each Summer term.

The courses are delivered collaboratively with colleagues in MECSS, and as appropriate, Primary Strategy and Secondary Strategy teams, Leading SENCOs and colleagues from schools.

Recent course content has included:

  • An introduction to the local and national context for SEN/Inclusion and EAL, including legislation such as the Disability Discrimination Act.
  • A focus on individual pupil needs and strategies to address them, and an explanation of support from external agencies.
  • Personalising provision, with consideration given to the function of IEPs and provision mapping.
  • Making provision for gifted and talented learners, especially those with ‘dual or multiple exceptionality’.
  • ‘Getting to know your TA!’:  a workshop on making best use of additional support in the classroom (secondary).
  • Observing inclusive teaching.
  • Intervention programmes at Wave 2 & 3 (primary).
  • Philosophy 4 Children.
