Autism and Asperger’s syndrome

The National Autistic Society web site has a section called ‘Breaking down barriers to learning’. It identifies key difficulties and lists suggested strategies. There is a useful section on transition planning.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders

Both the commercial and information sites have useful free downloads to support communication and learning for children with ASD.

Hearing impairment and speech and language disorders

Designed for pupils with a hearing impairment, but useful for pupils ho need a very visual layout. This site offers independent access to the curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2. There are teaching resources with simple text supported by pictures and information and links focusing on deafness and language disorders.

Visual impairment

The Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) contains information and advice for teachers and support staff working with children who are visually impaired, including current initiatives and training opportunities

Disfigurements of the face or body from any cause

Changing Faces web site has a wealth of information for children/young people and professionals. It includes guides for teachers and others working with children and young people. These guides are available for three age groups: early years (3-6yrs), junior (7-11yrs) and secondary (11-16+yrs).

Mental Health

Young Minds focuses on the emotional health of children and young people. It provides leaflets and guides for teachers and parents/carers. They also produce booklets for 11-18 year olds. The information centre has information listed by topics; each topic has reading/resources, web links and national organisations.

Behaviour

This site contains information and resources on positive approaches to managing behaviour inside and outside of the classroom

Users of symbols

This web site provides resources for symbol users. There are 4 sections: ‘My World’ contains contributions from symbol users about themselves, ‘Stories’ a large range of stories, both fiction and non fiction across the age range, ‘Learning’ contains a number of topics for young to secondary aged pupils and ‘elive’ a monthly magazine.

A wide range of information for teachers and parents.

Down Syndrome and other pupils with complex needs

A range of information and resources. It includes the ‘Secondary Transfer Guide’ written by Hertfordshire County Council and DSA which is an easy to follow guide to making the big step from primary to secondary school.

A useful site featuring downloadable resources, including free software for English, Maths and other areas for all ages.

ICT activities linked to English and Maths National Curriculum. Games are targeted at KS1 but are also suitable for older learners with learning difficulties

Hearing Loss

A downloadable booklet for  early year settings. It contains information on how to welcome a hearing impaired child into a nursery, communication, creating an inclusive environment and inclusive learning strategies and understanding deafness.
