"Great session. You make science accessible even for us non- specialist. See you at the next training."
"Thanks for an excellent inset - exactly what we needed!"
"All objectives of course met. Delivered very well- lots of good advice and support. Thank you." |
The Science team support schools to develop effective learning, appropriate curricula and responsive leadership in science.
The team provides opportunities for schools to network, learn from one another, learn from best practice and explore new initiatives. They enable schools to build capacity and sustainable improvements through central training, bespoke training, coaching and mentoring in schools, at network meetings, through departmental reviews, self evaluation and OfSTED preparation.
The team has a wealth of experience working across both primary and secondary phases, a proven track record and well established relationships with schools and local partners.
They are able to offer advice and guidance on safe practices within science and radiation monitoring.
Independent and non-LA schools can buy into membership of CLEAPSS and it’s associated Radiation Protection Advisory service, significantly reducing the individual establishment costs.

Raising Standards
The Science team encourage departments to look at progress rather attainment alone and to use progress data to inform next steps for learning and to secure good outcomes for all groups of pupils. We provide support for teachers and middle leaders to identify groups and individual pupils that are at risk of underachieving. We can help teams and individuals to develop appropriate intervention strategies to meet pupils’ needs and to ensure pupils make good progress in learning about science and meeting projected targets.
We provide in class support to teachers to enable them to engage and motivate pupils to achieve their individual targets, through interactive teaching and learning approaches which help to build pupils independence. The team support the development of assessment for learning techniques that help teachers and pupils assess progress and we can provide bespoke and central training for schools on differentiation and support for groups of pupils (gifted and talented, special needs etc).
Behaviour for Learning
Developing good behaviour for learning is crucial to pupils’ success in science. The Science team promote the use of interactive teaching and independent learning strategies which engage and motivate pupils. We help teachers to build good relationships with pupils and to build enthusiasm through the use of ‘hands on’ learning and stimulating contexts.
Being a practical subject science lessons offer the opportunity for pupils to work in groups, develop social skills and take responsibility for their learning and the safety of themselves and others. To support this, the Science team work with teachers and teaching assistants, of all experience levels and in all phases, to develop the strategies and approaches to manage successful practicals and group work.
The Science team works with teams to develop their own behaviour for learning policy, with appropriate structures and strategies to monitor and improve behaviour for learning.
Support can be offered through consultancy, coaching or training for individual or groups of schools.
Effective Learning and Progress in Science
The Science team believe in enquiry-based learning where pupils learn through questioning, exploration, research and hands-on practical work. Building pupils’ independence is essential to the way we work so that strategies that help to engage pupils with the learning process are a feature of all our training and in class work.
The best learning in science occurs when pupils are given opportunities to discuss and articulate their developing ideas and explore their misconceptions. The Science team support schools to develop group work and talk strategies so that teachers can incorporate these into their teaching.
The team provide bespoke training in science on different pedagogies and have an up-to-date knowledge of the latest developments in teaching and learning. The Science team provides in class support and training to teachers to enable them to engage and motivate pupils, through enquiry-based, interactive teaching and learning approaches.
The team support the development of assessment for learning techniques that help teachers and pupils to assess progress and identify next steps for learning through the use of questioning, success criteria and peer and self assessment. We regularly provide central and bespoke training in assessment for learning.
The Science team work with middle leaders to develop periodic and summative assessments which help them to monitor the progress of learning.
Subject Leadership in Science
Good leadership and management is the cornerstone of school improvement. The Science team offer support at both primary and secondary level for new and aspiring subject leaders to explore the elements of leadership and management, and the skills needed to be an effective leader.
Support is offered to develop the skills needed to analyse data effectively and develop effective subject self evaluation and subsequent action planning.
Those new to the role can be given guidance and strategies on:
- monitoring the evaluation of new developments
- evaluation of teaching and learning and pupil progress
- requirements for accurate teacher assessment
- the place of target setting to secure pupil progress
- ideas for promoting the subject both within and outside the school
- how to enrich the experience of pupils in science.
Support can be offered through consultancy, coaching or training for individual or groups of schools.
Developing Teaching and Learning in Science
The Science team provides in class support to teachers to enable them to motivate pupils to achieve their individual targets. We help teachers to develop interactive teaching and learning approaches which help to engage pupils with science.
Building pupils’ independence is essential to the way we work so that strategies that help to engage pupils with the learning process are a feature of all our training and in class work. The team support the development of assessment for learning techniques that help teachers and pupils to assess progress and identify next steps for learning through the use of questioning, success criteria and peer and self assessment. We regularly provide central and bespoke training in assessment for learning.
Working with middle leaders, the team help them to develop strategies and systems to enable close monitoring of pupil progress and the evaluation of teaching and learning. We support middle leaders to develop intervention strategies to ensure pupils make good progress.
Support can be offered through consultancy, coaching or training for individual or groups of schools.
