Plantlife's Successful Bee Scene Year 2010 and Looking Forward to 2011 with your help

This year a number of schools were involved with a nationwide bee survey. Next year there will be a new survey taking place across the UK.

Applications NOW OPEN for The London International Youth Science Forum 2012! New
16th – 30th August 2012

The London International Youth Science Forum (LIYSF) is a unique event for leading science students from around the world aged 17 to 21 years old and they are now looking for the next students to join them!

Since 1959 LIYSF has welcomed young scientists the world over to come together to learn, exchange views, opinions and share knowledge at this exciting and dynamic residential event. Students also get the chance to visit some of the world's leading university departments and industrial sites. Over the two weeks, LIYSF truly becomes an international community and this event is the only one of it's kind.

There has been an improving trend in the provision of science education over the period of the report, especially in secondary schools, but there are areas that need further improvement, especially in primary schools.

Achievement & Attainment Tables - January 2011

Following the Coalition's publication of the White Paper there will be changes to the Achievement and Attainment tables published for school exam results at KS4.

As in previous years 5A*-C GCSEs including English and Maths; and the 2 'good' sciences (including BTEC, OCR Nationals and 'Core plus Additional Applied') measure will be published.

This year there will also be the new EBacc measurement (which includes: English, maths, sciences, MFL and Humanities).
The sciences that will count in this measure are:

  • Triple science
  • Core plus additional
  • Double Award science

BTEC, OCR Nationals and 'Core plus Additional Applied' will NOT count.

With the introduction of new GCSEs from September 2011 and with Y9 Options imminent, departments should consider their curriculum pathways carefully for KS4.

FREE kit - Debate on Science Issues

Teachers can order a FREE debate kit at. This is a project to get as many teachers as possible using discussions in their classrooms.

These kits have been thoroughly tested and are great How Science Works (HSW) resources for developing debate and discussions skills in science classes. The project is funded by the lovely Wellcome Trust who want to promote discussion of biomedical issues.
