Sports Coaches of the Future

The Stevenage School Sport Co-ordinator Partnership, based at Marriotts Sports College, recently received the Youth Sport Trust National Development Award. It was presented at the recent Schools Sports Partnerships National Conference by Olympic gold medallists Darren Campbell and Dame Kelly Holmes.

Sponsored by PGL, the award recognises the value of a project that builds the confidence and employment opportunities of young people, while building capacity to deliver more coaching to other young people.

It was also acknowledgement of the innovative work of Jill Eaton, partnership development manager, and the staff and volunteers involved in the project.

The project is designed to enable young people to work as sports coaches and gain national coaching qualifications.

Jill Eaton said: "This project takes the value of mentoring and gives youngsters an opportunity to work in a supportive environment to develop their skills for life. It gives them the support they need to take them onto the next step - already our coaches are finding sports related employment through the scheme.”

The Stevenage Partnership is one of twelve in Hertfordshire who act to increase and develop PE, sport and physical activities in all schools.

The PESSCL national survey for 2006 – 07 shows the partnerships are achieving a higher level than the national average in many areas of work.

Best Sporting School in Dacorum

Well done to Jupiter Drive JMI School in Hemel Hempstead, who have recently won the 2007 award for best sporting school in Dacorum.

Headteacher, Margie Knight attended the award ceremony along with four pupils, football coach, Mr Guest, and his wife who is the school’s sports teaching assistant and helps to organise a huge range of events and activities at the school.

Theo Walcott from Arsenal was the special guest presenting the awards. It was a very exciting evening, especially when Jupiter Drive was announced as a winning school.

Margie uses every opportunity to bring sporting opportunities into the school and the children experience many different clubs, including early morning sport, ‘top ten’ (5-10 minutes exercise in between lessons) and fun runs, alongside all the usual sporting activities offered by schools.
