A new approach for school sports - decentralising power, incentivising competition, trusting teachers - December 2010Michael Gove has recently set out the direction of travel, and initial funding, for the Coalition Government’s new approach on school sports. Schools will receive funding to allow PE teachers to further embed competitive sport in schools across the country and raise participation. Read full details at: Refocusing sport in schools to build a lasting legacy of the 2012 Games - October 2010The Coalition Government is committed to reforming sport in schools to create a lasting Olympic legacy. Ministers want to encourage more competitive sport so it is a vibrant part of the ethos of all schools, and to give schools the freedom to organise sport themselves rather than imposing a bureaucratic system for them to follow. The Department for Education is ending the £162 million PE and Sports Strategy of the previous administration, to give schools the time and freedom to focus on providing competitive sport. In recent years there has been a decline in young people taking part in traditionally competitive sports such as rugby union, netball and hockey because teachers and school sports coordinators have been too focused on top-down targets. In fact the most recent School Sport Survey showed that only around two in every five pupils play competitive sport regularly within their own school, and only one in five plays regularly against other schools.
This exciting programme will give talented female footballers between the ages of 16 and 19 the chance to combine academic studies with practical football experience and compete against other academies in the London and South East region. The Academy will offer players a route from Watford FC’s highly successful Centre of Excellence programme and feed in to the club’s senior ladies set up at reserve and first team level. By completing the one/two year programme, players will gain the skills required to help them progress to a higher standard of football as well as gain experiences necessary to work with an award winning Community programme.

East of England launch for London 2012 Education Toolkit Sportsmark & Activemark Changes Old awards will become the new Sports Partnership Mark (2006) Kitemarks will be awarded annually and automatically through the National School Sport Survey (no extra paperwork). A new Sports Partnership Mark will be introduced to reward highly effective sports partnerships A key indicator in determining whether a school qualifies for one of the kitemarks will be its success in enabling pupils to take up their entitlement to at least 2 hrs high quality PE and sport each week. Primary schools will also be assessed on the range of sport and dance they offer and how many pupils take part in club sport. Secondary schools will have to do all of the above as well and it will depend on how many pupils take part in competitive sport and how many take up leadership and volunteering roles (JSLA). The new scheme starts with the school sport survey May 2006.
