Main Principles Underlying Family Learning Programmes:

  • inter-generational work providing opportunities for parents and children to learn together
  • school-based

Aims of the Project

  • to improve parents' and children's literacy
  • to develop a climate in which the home literacy and culture are shared and valued
  • to support the parents in developing their own strategies to help their children with the early stages of learning to read and write
  • to provide parents with information about school expectations, the curriculum and the education system

Focus Communities

Hertfordshire's Education Development Plan includes specific targets for raising the achievement of pupils from Pakistani and Bangladeshi backgrounds. These communities are the main focus for family learning work.

The Approach

Family learning activities may include any of the following:

  • poetry/story-telling and making dual-language texts
  • ICT for parents and children (laptops as a tool to enhance learning in community languages and English). This is linked to the DfEE's Community Lifelong Learning programme.
  • Family Reading Groups (FRGs) after school
  • Family learning has also linked into community language classes, complementary schools and initiatives set up by schools during or after school hours
  • Mentoring
  • Study skills

Creche facilities are available.
