The Mary Seacole Trunk

Resources for Teaching about the Life and Times of a Famous Victorian Woman

The ‘Mary Seacole Trunk’ contains objects (some of them are authentic Victorian) which Mary Seacole may have taken with her to the Crimea. It can be borrowed by schools (usually for a period of 2 weeks). Prior booking is essential.

‘Our Heritage’ at Broom Barns Primary School, Stevenage

As this was our second consecutive year of using ‘The History of the Presence of Black People in Britain’ Exhibition we wanted to make a change of focus (last year our emphasis was on poetry using the support material that accompanied the exhibition).  Prior to the Black History Exhibition in October we bought some new A3 photographs of black achievers in the 20th and 21st century. We decided to make our main focus ‘Heritage’ this year and used the overall theme in assemblies to investigate the athlete Kelly Holmes, Baroness Amos the cabinet minister and the poet Benjamin Zephaniah. During literacy and history lessons we investigated the wide variety of heritages present in our Year 6 class.

This work developed speaking and listening skills, leading to class and whole school presentations, geography skills and biography writing.  The enhanced knowledge led to a greater understanding of our varied school community.
We discovered that our heritages involved Africa, India, Bangladesh, Italy, the Caribbean, Germany, Scotland and Ireland.  In a prominent part of school a display was created to share with the whole school.  A map of the world was at the centre of our display. Photographs of the children were taken and placed next to their writing.

They offered an educational workshop entitled ‘Take Me Back’.  Participants included the actor, director and writer Clint Dyer. This gave the children the opportunity to listen and ask questions from a range of people talking about their heritage, and learn an excellent rap!
