Overview

The Herts for Learning Mathematics team provides support to all Hertfordshire schools, their teachers and ancillary staff, as well as parents and carers.

Our aim is that young people in Hertfordshire achieve the highest possible standards in mathematics.

The mathematics team is involved in a large range of projects to support Hertfordshire schools. These include:

  • Support for mixed age planning in small primary schools
  • ICT and mathematics working parties
  • Enabling access to A Level Further Mathematics
  • Supporting the development of family Numeracy

A skilled teacher and leader, David leads the mathematics team.  He has a proven track record in supporting schools to improve outcomes for pupils and has successfully led a number of school partnerships.  David is particularly interested in assessment for learning, curriculum development, enhancing mathematical thinking through talk and fostering school communities of learners.

Siobhan King

Siobhan has considerable experience of primary education, having worked in a range of different schools as a teacher, middle leader and deputy head teacher. She is focused on improving the life chances of all children through effective teaching and learning and one recent area of expertise has focused on improving raising achievement of PPG children in mathematics.

 

She has supported teaching staff, school leaders and governors and is passionate about developing positive attitudes to learning. She is particularly interested in developing teaching which enables pupils to be appropriately challenged and to secure a deep understanding and love of mathematics.

Kate Kellner-Dilks

An experienced school leader and highly effective teacher, Kate has led many aspects of school improvements including mathematics, across a range of schools. Kate is particularly passionate about developing high quality talk in maths within the classroom to help pupils develop their reasoning skills and show mastery of their learning. Kate returns to the Teaching and Learning Advisory team after 3 and years back in school as a Deputy Headteacher.

 

Kate has a secure knowledge of how to lead school improvement. Her previous 4 years as an adviser for maths (2008-2012), mean she is also experience in writing and leading training and supporting individual schools. Kate also holds NPQH (June 2012) and an accreditation for her consultancy work from the National Strategies.

 

As a Teaching Learning Adviser, she provides bespoke support for schools to raise standards and improve outcomes for all pupils, working with senior and middle leaders, teachers and pupils in a variety of ways to suit the needs of each individual context.

Charlie Harber

Charlie brings considerable experience of working across the primary age range as a teacher, subject leader and assistant headteacher. She became a consultant in 2009 and was accredited as Local Consultant for Improvement: Primary mathematics in 2010.  Charlie gained accreditation as a Numicon and Numicon Intervention trainer in 2012.

 

As a consultant, Charlie has a proven track record in working alongside schools through a variety of models, to improve outcomes for all children. She is passionate about nurturing a deep love of mathematics in all children by making maths real, exciting and accessible for all.

 

Her training and consultancy is always highly evaluated and has been described as inspirational, highly motivating and fun!

Louisa Ingram

As an experienced school leader, Louisa has worked on improving standards in teaching and learning in a range of contexts.  She has wide-ranging experience in providing support for teachers, middle leaders and senior leaders with development of practice, pedagogy and school systems.


She has a keen interest in using assessment and tracking effectively so to raise achievement and ensure quality first teaching.

Approaches to maths, that she is particularly keen to promote, include encouraging the use of practical, exciting activities and real life contexts to ensure maths is fun, engaging and relevant to all pupils.

Deborah Mulroney

 An extremely experienced adviser, Deborah’s particular passion is in the improvement of children’s talk and reasoning in mathematics.  Much of Deborah’s work in school has been in partnership with a team of consultants and SEAs in the intervention team working intensively in schools towards whole school improvement This nationally recognised team have led the way in narrowing the gaps of achievement and improving the life chances of all children.

Julia Scott

In her role as Teaching and Learning Adviser Julia has worked closely with schools’ SLTs to support school improvement.  Julia is passionate about providing a rich and exciting curriculum for all children, and in particular improving the quality of teaching and learning in mathematics. Areas of expertise include; developing subject leaders, assessment for learning, including effective use of success criteria to support learning and cross curricular planning ensuring progression.

Rachel Rayner

Rachel Rayner

Rachel has spent over a decade in senior management working particularly on improving standards of teaching and learning.  She is an accredited Maths Specialist Teacher completing the course in 2011.   In her role as adviser, Rachel has been successful at developing staff in their middle management roles.  A key element of her role has been working with senior leaders when identifying needs and then supporting improvement through a range of CPD approaches. 

 

Rachel is especially keen to develop mathematically rich learning environments to promote independence and develop children’s natural curiosity.  A strong advocate for enjoyment and positive engagement with her subject, she works with schools to help them change children’s (and adult) attitudes towards maths. She is also particularly skilled at creating lessons and sequences of lessons that include opportunities for problem solving and deeper mathematical thinking; providing challenge for all.

Louise Racher

Louise has over a decade of experience in primary education, both as an outstanding classroom practitioner and as part of a leadership team in an outstanding Hertfordshire School. Her support work and ability to model excellence in her practice has lead to improved outcomes for pupils in, both, her own and other schools. Her passion lies in inspiring teachers to be the best practitioners they can be so that they can, in turn, help their pupils develop a love for learning.

Louise is particularly keen to develop effective teaching and the confident use of assessment in classrooms to ensure every lesson engages all individual pupils at an appropriate level

Gillian Shearsby-Fox

Gillian has spent the past seven years on the leadership team of a large north London Junior School - predominantly as the school’s Deputy Head but also a successful period of Headship. During that time her main focus was to lead school improvement through: raising standards of teaching and learning, tracking pupil progress and developing the effectiveness of ‘Assessment for Learning’ practices. Gillian has significant experience in supporting all members of the educational community from NQTs to senior leaders, parents to governors with all aspects of school life.

Gillian has a passion for mathematics and believes that all children should leave primary school with a secure understanding of number and the ability to tackle mathematical problems with confidence.

A highly skilled and innovative practitioner, Nicola has a particular interest in developing pupils thinking skills and providing enriching opportunities for all through a cross-curricular approach.

Nicola has a proven track record of delivering high quality professional development, achieving a Distinction for her Masters in Leading Learning in 2013 and is an NCETM-accredited professional lead.

As Teaching Learning Adviser, she provides bespoke support for schools to raise standards and improve outcomes for all pupils, working with middle leaders, teachers and pupils in a variety of ways to suit the needs of each individual context.

Leading Professionals in Mathematics

Hertfordshire is fortunate that a large number of very good teachers prepared to be Leading Mathematics Teachers (LMTs).

Teachers are encouraged to visit these leading Professionals to observe good practice and perhaps revitalise or move forward in their own teaching!

Visits by newly qualified teachers are particularly encouraged.
