Thanks to the generosity of Hertfordshire Education Authority in part-funding
my endeavours, I was able to attend the recent four-yearly I.C.M.E. Congress
in Denmark, which focuses on the latest developments and findings in research
into mathematics education across the world, at all levels and across
the whole range of institutions.
The Congress consisted of seven days of regular and plenary lectures, discussion and topic study groups, exhibitions, national presentations, a thematic afternoon, organised and informal meetings, social events and entertainments provided by the host country, with many opportunities to discover new approaches and ideas in the field of mathematics worldwide. As this congress is primarily an English-speaking event, I was able to attend lectures and presentations by participants from Japan, China, India, U.S.A. and Italy, as well as concentrating on certain topic areas of personal and professional interest such as Special Educational Needs and International Collaboration, which relate to my role as Maths Coordinator in a school for boys with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties and my school’s link with a partner school in Ghana, West Africa for shared project work.
