Statistics GCSE

“Double English? Double science? Why not double maths?”

Coursework

Make sure that your coursework satisfies the GCSE Statistics specifications – it will then be perfectly acceptable for GCSE Mathematics; for example most GCSE Statistics’ coursework involves the whole data handling cycle including the collection of raw data… One piece of coursework satisfies both examinations. The marking criteria are different, so the courseworks will need marking twice against different mark schemes. If a piece of coursework has to be sent for moderation, photocopy it, in case the same piece is required for the other examination.

Some Schools are Trialling

  • putting lower sets in for Statistics GCSE. Students have completed the Mathematics Foundation syllabus many times over before the start of Year 10! The Statistics route is more motivational.
  • teaching Statistics with higher groups during a non-timetabled session eg after school once per week… Apparently for higher ability students the extra content is useful for the Mathematics Statistics Project anyway and does not involve a huge amount of extra content.
  • starting Year 10 Statistics GCSE after the NC Tests in Year 9 with the top set – this was highly motivational for the students! This particular school is now running Mathematics and Statistics in parallel, with two lessons per week on Mathematics and one lesson per week on Statistics. The intention is to enter students for both examinations at the end of Year 11.
