2009 ICT Conference

John DavittAdvanced notice that the annual Herts ICT conference will be held at HDC Robertson House, Stevenage on 31st March 2009, entitled, ‘Taking learning into the future.’

The keynote speech will be delivered by John Davitt, a writer, broadcaster and education technology specialist, who has worked in the education sector for the last twenty-five years.  The keynote will be  followed by a wide range of workshops/seminars from which delegates can select.

Learning Platform Update

At the beginning of this term your school will have received an email regarding the latest developments with the Hertfordshire Learning Platform and what it means for your school.  The new version of the LP (version 2) is now available and schools can select their route for migration.

Please contact Patsy Woodward Tel: 01438 844813 or by email: patsy.woodward@hertscc.gov.uk.

Please note that there are now two log-on boxes for the learning platform on the HGfL: version 1 for existing users and version 2 for users being trained in the Autumn term or that have had their sites migrated (example shown below).

SEAL resources

SEAL resourcesFollowing another successful collaboration with Herts Schools, Hannah East (PNS) and Sue Pennington (ICT) have published further fantastic teacher-developed resources to support the teaching of SEAL units throughout the primary phase.

ICT Clusters – Autumn Focus: Maths and ICT

cluster groupsICT Clusters are a great way of networking with ICT subject leaders or anyone interested in ICT.  The clusters are free of charge and held at locations across Hertfordshire.

The invitation is open to all.  Feel free to come to the meeting most convenient to you.

We hold six cluster sessions, one in each area (North, South, East and West) and two at HDC Stevenage.  This term our Primary ICT clusters will focus on ICT within the Mathematics Framework and will be presented in partnership with colleagues from the Primary National Strategy team.  Specifically the sessions will focus on the teacher-developed resources using ICT to support Using and Applying Mathematics within Block C (Handling data and measures).

Please take a look at the project and resources:

Harnessing Technology Grant

Harnessing Technology grantThis grant needs to be spent by August 2009.  Priorities for use of the funding are that all proposed purchases should benefit learners and the educational process, and be spent on ICT hardware based on school level ICT needs and priorities.

To support schools with identifying the most useful way to use this funding, the ICT Team and School IT Systems Support (SITSS) have worked with Hertfordshire Supplies to produce a list of recommended ICT equipment that can be purchased through the Harnessing Technology Grant.

If you have a query regarding your allocation of funding, please call Patsy Woodward Tel: 01438 844813.

Hertfordshire Handheld Project

EDAThose of you who have recently attended ICT cluster meetings or conferences will probably be aware of the handheld learning projects that are currently expanding.  In September, our eDevelopments Adviser, Chris Carter will be working with schools in the Letchworth area to pilot a large scale PDA project that will span pupil transition from Year 6 to 7.

eSafety

Think u KnowCEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection) has now launched resources to support the teaching of eSafety for KS1.

From this September, on HGfL, there will be further guidance relating to eSafety, including a model policy for your school to adapt and use, plus a flowchart for dealing with esafety incidents, as agreed by all major stakeholders on the County’s safeguarding board.

Slow Connection on HGfL

From time to time schools do experience slow connections to the Internet.  If this happens to you the first thing to do is to check whether access to all sites is slow or just the particular site you are currently interested in.  If all sites have slow connections there are three possible causes:

  • General congestion across the whole internet
  • A fault with the NTL (HGfL) connection to your school
  • A fault within your own school network.

If in doubt, please call the NTL helpdesk and they will be able to advise you and offer you a check of your Internet line.  If this indicates that there is a fault with the NTL line they will arrange for it to be fixed within 4 hours.

If NTL say that there is no problem with their line please contact the ICT Technical Adviser, Chris Seviour, for further advice by email: chris.seviour@hertscc.gov.uk

ICT Development Work

Some Hertfordshire teachers have successfully gained a Certificate for Continuing Professional Studies from Cambridge University for their ICT work.  The Certificate involved them planning and implementing a project embedding the use of ICT in their schools. The projects covered many different foci including one exploring the benefits of podcasting for year 6 pupils, and another using Myst III (the game demonstrated by Tim Ryelands at the 2008 ICT conference) to support pupils writing.

The course, Teacher-led development with subject focus will be run again this year.

Contact Shelagh Mackenzie for more information or book online:
