The snack swapper wheel
A New Change for Life Resource |
On October 19 Change4Life launches its Snack Swapper. The Snack Swapper is a little wheel device that shows healthy options to sugary, salty or fatty snacks. For instance, if you usually like to snack on a biscuit, turn the wheel to reveal the word biscuit in one window and in the opposite window you will see a healthier option such as rice cakes or grapes.

A Guide to handwashing |
The Health Protection Agency in partnership with an animation company, Vis-IT Ltd, schools and other key agencies have developed a resource pack to teach handwashing in primary schools. The pack links in with the school curriculum using animation, lesson plans, an art competition, posters and much much more.

The DCSF has launched the next cookbook in the 'Real meals' series. 'Real meals: simple cooking — cold food that tastes great' contains over 20 recipes for simple, tasty and healthy cold food such as deli wraps, rainbow salad and muffins. All are great for picnics and as packed lunches for days out during the summer holidays.

Copies for every Year 6 pupil are available free of charge to primary schools.

The Schools FEAST network |
In 2006 the government introduced the food based standards aimed at improving the quality of school meals. The nutrient standards will be introduced into primary schools in September 2008, followed in September 2009 into secondary schools. These will require schools, local authorities or catering providers to ensure that an average school lunch meets specific standards for energy and contains certain levels of 13 nutrients, including iron, calcium and zinc. The School FEAST network will, over time,support everyone involved in providing school meals, and their employers, to access training and qualifications. In meeting this challenge, every member of the network will provide a comprehensive package of training and qualifications, from hands-on cookery lessons to formal qualifications at NVQ Level 2 and beyond.

Pick up the Beat |
The Beat campaign aims to inspire and motivate you to get exercising. The campaign message is clear - that if we up the tempo of our heartbeat for just 30 minutes a day, we could reduce our risk of heart disease by half.
This site includes a wealth of features on how to get active and eat healthily, plus how to cut out major risk factors such as smoking. There's also an interactive quiz which helps you to set your own health goals, and a free mobile text messaging service to give you support and motivation.

Myleene and Frank say ‘healthy school dinners are cool’ |
Celebrities including Frank Lampard and Myleene Klass have leant their support to the School Food Trust. Following the success of the first posters for dining halls our new celebrity posters are being sent to schools in time for the start of the new term. Anecdotal research, including some you may have seen on BBC 2’s, The Truth about Food recently, shows how positive peer pressure can influence children’s choices. As a result of feedback from our last posters these can be downloaded from the SFT website A3 or A4 black & white or colour so you can print and laminate them.

Food Partnership Week 25th - 29th June 2007 |
The Food partnership is promoting the offer of free training in practical food skills to teachers by food specialists during Design & Technology Week. By running recruitment events in 6 regions the food partnership aims to enlist more secondary food teachers to become trainers and more primary teachers to sign up for training from them. Food Partnership programme is the only DfES accredited provider of practical food skills for primary school teachers; training is completely free to primary schools; training is given by specialist food teachers who provide consistent clear advice on nutrition and kitchen hygiene. The events have been designed to be inspiring, fun and informative with practical taster sessions, presentations and a display of take –away resources at each venue. Booking forms for the events will be placed on the Design and Technology website by mid may.

In September 2007, scientific research confirmed that mixtures of artifical food colourings and a commonly used food preservative can increase hyperactive behaviour in susceptible children. For
the fifth year, the British Dietetic Association (BDA) launched their
annual Weight Wise campaign targeting teenagers and their families.
The lack of physical activity combined with unhealthy eating habits
is really taking its toll on youngsters' health, it is no wonder
that obesity levels are rising at such a huge rate. There is no real
help or guidance provided for teenagers.
However, the BDA campaign
'weightwise: the next generation' has developed a new website packed
full of info and advice for teenagers. They can log on to find out
how much more energy they could be burning off by checking out the
'Get Moving Calculator'. For teens and parents alike there are some
fantastic recipe ideas, tips on how to get more active as well as 'Shifting
The Balance' - an interactive feature that allows you to find out just
how much fat and sugar is in the everyday food they eat.
