"Over time, all pupils in primary schools who wish to will have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument;" Secretary of State for Education and Skills, 2000

"this (project) has been a revelation, the impact being not only musical but on the children's whole approach to learning"

What is Wider Opportunities?

Wider Opportunities gives children the chance to learn about music in curriculum time through playing a musical instrument.

This is delivered to whole classes in Key Stage 2.

It is a national scheme, but tailored locally to meet the needs and ambitions of individual schools in order that every child experiences instrumental music making.

Evaluation and feedback regularly shows how our Wider Opportunities projects are giving children benefits far beyond the obvious musical experiences and skills.

In Hertfordshire 2007, the Music Service is currently delivering projects in over 75 schools with further expansion planned.

Woodwind, brass, guitars, keyboards, African drums, steel pans, strings and music technology are all being taught to whole classes of Hertfordshire KS2 children.
