More Information

Principal Conductor: Patrick Bailey

Required standard: Grade Vll
Age range: 13 - 18 years

HSSO meets during the autumn, spring and summer
holidays. The courses are usually for 3 - 4 days.

HSSO is an orchestra that has successfully developed an exciting mix of opportunities from ‘traditional’ orchestral courses and concerts, through collaborations with other County Groups to creative projects. Recent performances have included a highly acclaimed production of Monteverdi’s Orfeo in collaboration with The Opera Group and a project with HYJE working
under the inspirational guidance of jazz composer, Django Bates. In April 2005 the orchestra became the Hertfordshire Schools’ String Orchestra with a
performance of Schubert’s Mass in C. The orchestra will participate in the Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala at the Royal Albert Hall in March 2007 in a performance of a specially commissioned work for orchestra and massed choirs.

The orchestra works with professional conductors and experienced sectional tutors from within the County teaching staff. Auditionees will usually be senior members of their Area Youth Orchestra having reached a minimum standard of
Grade VII.

All members of HSSO have the opportunity to progress
to the County Youth Orchestra; this is normally by
further audition.

‘Brilliant - hard work, but great fun!’
