County Youth Choir 2005

The choir (male and female voices) specialises in singing good, challenging and varied repertoire: gospel, classical jazz, to name but a few of the styles. There are also opportunities for solo and small ensemble singing.

Recent concert programmes have included A Russian Christmas; Songs from the Stage; and a Mozart Birthday Celebration. We also collaborate with County instrumental groups and will be performing with the County Youth Orchestra in a performance of William Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast in August 2006.

Conducted by Cathy Heller-Jones, the choir is supported by voice tutors who attend all rehearsals. Singers receive tuition in voice production, with particular care given to our younger male singers as they go through their vocal transition.

Next season’s programme includes a short tour to Paris in the spring, performing in the Royal Albert Hall in the Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala and taking part in a joint youth choir concert in commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St John’s Wood.

We hope to increase opportunities for some of our members to improve their own conducting skills and for this reason potential organ scholars may find membership of the choir useful even if you have limited singing experience yourself.

Entry to the choir is by audition to students who will be in years 10 to13 by the Autumn of 2006. This includes boys whose voices are still changing. Sight-reading ability is not essential although your music-reading skills will be assessed at the audition. All singers in the choir, regardless of their level of sight-reading when they join, will improve very quickly!
