The Hertfordshire Music Service - Opportunities
for Schools
Curriculum Support
Music staff work closely with other advisory staff
to ensure that schools are supported in all aspects of music. These include
primary music consultancy,
department review and inspection, continuing professional development,
publications and learning resources. Specialist support facilities include
music technology, special educational needs and multi-cultural music.

Workshops and Music Making days
The music service regularly arranges singing and
playing days in school. 'Live Music in Schools' groups will come into
school to perform to children
of all ages. This service is free to schools who subscribe to the
Music Service. The Music Service arranges education projects with professional
orchestras, and promotes concerts at major London venues. In recent
years many thousands of Hertfordshire children have taken part in
these events.

Promoting World Music in Schools
The County Gamelan is based at Stevenage Music
Centre where regular workshops for schools are presented and two gamelan
groups rehearse
weekly. Gamelan
residencies in schools are also organised at Stevenage. There
are various multi-cultural resources including instruments, CDs and
music at the
centre. A Music Service Steel Pan project is a current initiative
and there are
classes for children at Dacorum Music School in Hemel Hempstead.
An Africa Drumming Orchestra is being developed in 2000-2001 and
links have been
established with the Ravidassia Centre in Hitchin, where Indian
music
and dance are taught. A Samba Band rehearses at the Watford School
of Music.
