Spring County Concerts

Despite the Gala preoccupying much of the spring term there were still two very successful courses run over the Easter break:

County Youth Wind Orchestra performed a night of film music at Watford Colloseum. Under the direction of Mark Eager, the Orchestra treated the audience to rousing peformnace of some film classics including Star Wars, Revenge of the Sith, James Bond 007 and Dukas' Sorcerer's Apprentice
County Youth Orchestra, conducted by Peter Stark, celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the Benslow Instrument Loan Scheme with a sparkling performance of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. After the evening began with J Strauss's Die Fledermaus, they were joined by Jane Ng who performed on a Vuillaume violin on loan to her through the scheme to perform Beethoven Romance no 2 and Ravel's Tzigane. The audience in St John's Smith Square was very appreciative and the concert marked a fitting end to what had been an excellent spring season for music in Hertfordshire.
Winter County Concerts

The County Youth Music Groups were busy in the run up to Christmas with a number of concerts and activities:
The Royal College of Music was the venue for the County Youth Orchestra's concert which featured trumpter Phillipe Schartz (principal trumpet of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales) in a dazzling performance of the Arutiunian Trumpet Concerto. Conductor Peter Stark again delivered a concert that exceeded expecations with a rousing performance of Elgar's In the South and Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony - Pathetique.
HSSO, under the baton of guest conductor John Brennan performed an evening of showstoppers ranging from Walton's Crown Imperial, Grieg's Peer Gynt and John Williams' Jurassic Park. Their solosit, the violinist Aya Sanada stunned the audience with an amazing performance of Saint-Saens' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso. The packed Edward Guiness Hall at Dame Alice Owens School was also treated treated to an enchore in the shape of 633 Squadron!
The season began way back in October with a half-term course for the County Classical Guitars and Forum, which culminated in an impressive concert at Mid-Herts Centre for Music and Arts.
In addition to their weekly rehearsals, the County Youth Choir enjoyed a weekend residential course in November during which they recorded the music they had learnt. In December, they collaborated with the Watford Philharmonic Chorus and the BBC Concert Orchestra in a hugely succesful Christmas Concert in Watford Colosseum, conducted by Owain Arwel Hughes.
Other winter activities included very successful repertoire days for the County Youth Brass, County Youth Wind Orchestra, HYJE and County Recorder Ensemble which all showed much potential for their main courses later in the season.

Hertfordshire and the Music Manifesto
The music manifesto is about creating more music for more people. It offers a strategy and set of priorities for the next three to five years, focusing on children and young people. It has five key areas of commitment:
- To provide every young person with first access to a range of music experiences
- To provide more opportunities for young people to deepen and broaden their musical interests and skills
- To identify and nurture our most talented musicians
- To develop a world class workforce in music education
- To improve the support structures for young people's music making
Hertfordshire Music Service signed up to this at the very beginning and continues to embrace its aims and ambitions. The Manifesto Champion, Marc Jaffrey recently attended a Musical Futures Conference in Hertfordshire to lend his support to this other ground breaking venture, for which Hertfordshire has been a Pathfinder.

The orchestra under their special guest conductor, our very own Head of Service John Witchell, provided a varied and exciting programme of Humperdinck, Hansel & Gretel, Shostakovich Piano Concerto No 2 and Nielsen's Aladdin Suite. WindFest 2005
(Barbirolli Hall, Chorelywood, 2nd April)
Billed as a celebration of music for wind & percussion, the annual WindFest concert saw the County Youth Wind Orchestra and its feeder ensemble, the County Festival Wind Band, perform a wide variety of music to a very high standard. In what was a mammoth concert (!) both ensembles, conducted by Anthony Weeden and Eric Hinton respectively, performed music including Moorside Suite - Holst, Malague - Lecuono and Firedance - Woolfenden. The evening finished with a fantastic performance by CYWO of Symphony in Bb by Hindemith. This concert demonstrated not only the accomplishments of the county's most talented wind players but gave a platfrom for the stars of the future to perform alongside their peers.

County Youth Orchestra Concert
22 December saw the County
Youth Orchestra embark on one of its most challenging programmes
to date, performing Taras Bulba, Janacek and Saturn by Edwin Roxburgh.
Castle Hall in Hertford was treated to some dazzling virtuosity from
the orchestra under the expert guidance of conductor Peter Stark, with
Edwin Roxburgh in attendance. The orchestra rose to the challenge of
performing his work that included electronics and a mass of percussion.
Hertfordshire Schools' Symphony Orchestra
On the 2nd January, the Barbirolli Hall, Chorleywood was treated to
a very special evening of music making from HSSO.
This orchestra, meeting for the first time this season undertook a particualrly
ambitious programme: Tam O Shanter Overture (Arnold) The Water Goblin
(Dvorak) and Billy the Kid Suite (Copland) For many players this was their
first taste of a County Group haivng auditioned in the Autumn term to
take part. Under the expert guidance of Patrick Bailey this orchestra
was transformed over the three day course into an ensemble that delivered
a performance with real flair and style.
County Youth Brass
Paul Ruby made his debut as conductor with CYB in
their concert at the Plinstone Hall Letchworth on January 3rd. The band
performed a wide variety of repertoire including Under Two Flags (Coles)
Variations on Laudate Dominum (Gregson) and Rhapsody in Brass (Goffin)
The band rose to the considerable challenges of this programme and delivered
an exceptional performance of great assurance and sensitivity. We look
forward to Paul continuing his association with the Band.
County Youth Brass says farewell and thank you
to Cliff Jones
After
its successful tour of the Rhineland, the County
Youth Brass marked the end of an extraordinary association with the
Band for its Founder and Conductor Cliff Jones. Cliff formed the County
Band 34 years ago and has conducted it ever since. The Band enjoyed critical
acclaim both here and abroad, with his tours, most notably to Switzerland
becoming legendary! He also oversaw many recordings, firstly on vinyl
and later on CD.
This concert was a tribute to Cliff and as well as the current band,
he was joined in the second half by ex-members who had travelled from
all over the world just to be there for him. The Royal College of Music
was graced by over 100 brass players spanning the decades of the band's
history.
Cliff's
retirement was marked officially by the Music Service with a presentation
and he was also presented with a "zimmer frame" made with old
trombones from members of that section!
We
all wish Cliff well in his retirement. There will be a CD of the band
past and present and it is hoped this will be released by Christmas.

County Youth Orchestra dazzles with Mahler
It was another triumph for the Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra
under their principle guest conductor, Peter Stark. Mahler 3 is one of
the epics of the symphonic repertoire and the orchestra rose to this challenge
not once, but twice, performing at the Barbirolli Hall, Chorleywood and
the Duke's Hall at the Royal Academy of Music, London. They were assisted
by the London Philharmonic Choir, whose numbers were augmented by singers
from the County Youth Choir, Mid Herts Youth Choir and Mid Herts Chamber
Choir. These massed forces were joined by Cari Serle, whose sublime mezzo
soprano voice had the audiences transfixed.
These concerts brought to an end the highly successful 2003-04 season
for the orchestra and everone left the RAM already looking forward to
the Christmas course and concert.
Legends come to life at the Royal Albert Hall
More than 3,000 young people from 114 Hertfordshire schools took centre
stage at the Royal Albert Hall to sing about their home county.
Two massed choirs, dancers and classical, jazz and rap musicians were
in the spotlight at the Hertfordshire Schools’ Gala 2004 in two
performances on March 22.
Organised by Hertfordshire Music Service, it reflected the county’s
commitment to music making with16 per cent of young people - twice the
national average - receiving instrumental tuition.
The choirs performed a specially commissioned work about local landmarks
and legends written by composer Lin Marsh. Royals, Rogues and Rhymes tells
the story of legends such as Piers Shonks, the dragon slayer from Brent
Pelham and Jack o' Legs the Weston giant.
Wind instruments were another highlight of the gala with 125 young musicians
playing in massed double reed ensembles. Sponsored by national instrument
manufacturers Howarths, it was a unique event designed to promote interest
in learning to play bassoon and oboes.
Hertfordshire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra accompanied the choir
and there were also performances from Hertfordshire County Youth Brass,
Herts Dance, Hertfordshire County Youth Choir, Hertfordshire Youth Jazz
Ensemble, rappers from the County Rock Project, and a massed classical
guitar group.
Robert Gordon, Executive Member for Education, said: "Hertfordshire
Music Service has an outstanding reputation and the Royal Albert Hall
was the ideal place for our young singers and musicians to show off their
talents. We're delighted that 3,500 Hertfordshire pupils took
part. It was a great day for them, their families and teachers."
Hertfordshire Music Service head John Witchell said: "The concert
was all about Hertfordshire, and through the power of music, we celebrated
everything that is good about the county. We're proud of Hertfordshire
and we're proud of the musical achievements of our pupils in all our schools."
