Who Do We Think We Are? Week - 21st – 27th June 2010. Exploring Identity, Diversity and Citizenship

Who Do We Think We Are? Week 2010 - Grants for Schools Now Open

Grants of up to £500 are available for schools to develop activities linked to the ‘Who Do We Think We Are?’ Week programme for 2010

Who Do We Think We Are? is an annual programme of advice and curriculum support that helps schools explore the issues of identity, diversity and citizenship at the local and national scales through four key themes:

• School and community
• Relationships, belonging and faith
• History and settlement
• Britishness, national identity/values and the 2012 Games

The programme culminates in a national week of events and activities taking place in the week of 21st – 27th June 2010. During 2009, the project awarded 10 grants to maintained schools across the English regions to develop activities. Projects explored issues of identity, diversity and citizenship, involved students and people of all ages, across many diverse British communities and served to highlight the ties that bind us together in our local communities and nationally.
As part of ‘Who Do We Think We Are? Week’ 2010, schools are again being offered the opportunity to apply for grants of up to £500 to develop activities linked to the focus week. Further details of the application process can be obtained by visiting:

Applications will be accepted until 12th February 2009 and should be submitted to the Project Officer at wdwtwa@rgs.org.

How does your school encourage love of landscape and wildlife?

The love where you live photo competition for schools is about encouraging children at Key stages 2, 3 and 4 to take notice of their local surroundings  -  what’s beautiful and what’s not so great  -  so they learn to enjoy it, and look after it, at a young age.

Ecoschools  has partnered with not for profit recycling organisation Alupro to offer prizes for schools worth a total £1,000 for the best pictures in two categories:

  • How your school encourages love of local landscape
    and wildlife
  • Practical measures taken by children in your school to look after the environment

For instance, nature walks and farm visits make great pictures. And as examples of practical measures to care for the environment, recycling aluminium drinks cans and foil is 20 times more energy and carbon efficient than making them from virgin metal, so this is something everyone should do. And we can grow vegetables, clean up litter, turn down the thermostat, and walk or cycle to school instead of going by car.

For details of how to enter please go to:

Closing date is 28th February 2010.

Geographical Association

At the GA Annual Conference on 17th April, Professor David Lambert launched A different view, the Geographical Association's manifesto for school geography.

A different view makes a compelling case for geography in education. At its heart is the manifesto booklet, covering seven themes which state the GA's beliefs and priorities about learning geography. The manifesto is supported by:
eight families of superb images, downloadable from the GA site and free to use in the classroom
a growing collection of teaching activities using the photographs, from primary to post-16, free to download from the GA site
links to supporting web resources and sources of further information
a leaflet describing the manifesto and setting out the project timeline, going out to all UK schools.

A different view, and the supporting materials on the website, are designed to be used in any context where geography is taught, explained, encouraged or promoted. Visit:

OFSTED Report - Geography in Schools: Changing Practice

The report, published in January 2008, evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of geography in primary and secondary schools. At a time when geographical issues constantly make the headlines, there is some evidence of decline in provision in schools. This report shows the characteristics of good geography and fieldwork, and suggests what needs to be done to make the subject more relevant and enjoyable in all schools.

The report can be downloaded via the following link:
