Gifted and Talented Masterclass:
Writing for the Web workshop, March 2003
A number of Year 10 students were chosen from the
East Hertfordshire Quadrant to attend a ‘Writing for the Web Workshop’ at
Wheathampstead Development Centre in March this year.
The days were lead by Web Design specialists and
English specialists where activities focused on learning about Web Design
and Production.
Students from: Bishop's Stortford High, Broxbourne,
Chauncy, Freman College, Herts and Essex, Hockerill, Monks Walk, Onslow
St Audrey's, Presdales, Sele, Simon Balle, St Mary's High, Stanborough,
Turnford and Goffs considered web page design in terms ergonomics, levels
of attractiveness, and the validity and style of web page information.
Students critically evaluated web pages in existence
and learned from the mistakes and successes of web pages from around
the world.
The days culminated in the production of Web Pages
for Teenagers – covering School, Politics, Environment, Internet,
Relationships, Music, Film and Television, Health, Work and Money, Community.
Students learned how to ‘information architecture’;
hone their research skills and work as a team to edit, redraft and use
web design technology to ‘upload’ their ideas into web pages.
These days were a mammoth undertaking for students,
who felt the pressures of deadlines but who enjoyed the challenge to
produce pages suitable for audience and purpose. From critical analysis
to preparation to production in 48hrs was indeed ambitious! Here are
the excellent results - all students said they would have liked to have
longer on the task to perfect and complete. Web design careers are calling!

and produced by the students. (The links will open in a new window).
A great job done by all! Which one is your favourite?
