Introduction

The 10 RBCs have negotiated a licence for all schools, teachers, pupils and students to be able to download high-resolution files from the British Pathe Archive website for FREE.

Anyone can download low-resolution files (128Kbs) for free from their website, but high-resolution files (518Kbs) will normally cost either £25 - £500 each depending on your intended use.

The film clips (3,500 hours) and the stills (2,000,000 to choose from) are for educational use and can be edited for use in ‘Powerpoint’ type presentations, used with data projectors and whiteboards and placed into school intranets or LEA/RBC networks. They must not, however, be used on websites, published over the WWW or be made available beyond the school environment or be used for any commercial purpose.

Copyright & Consent Issues

What is Copyright?

Copyright is one of a collection of tools that fall under the heading of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) that can be used to: protect an author or developers rights; stop others abusing those rights; buy and sell rights; licence others to use your rights or obtain a licence from others to use their rights.

  1. The Resources in the British Pathe Archive can be used in the classroom - but the copyright remains with British Pathe.
  2. The watermarks on the resources are a reminder of copyright issues and responsibilities.
  3. Please note that some copyrights may reside with other persons or companies other than British Pathe - a point that is recognised in the Terms and Conditions. Copyright is multilayered and an individual item may have a number of rights holders associated with it - one rights holder saying “yes” does not necessarily cover other rights holder's interests.
  4. Should RBCs, LEAs, Partners or schools wish to use resources for commercial purposes or for publication beyond the Schools Licence or on the WWW they should apply to British Pathe for a commercial Licence.

Parent Consent Form

In some instances, schools may wish to add video clips and images of present day pupils. Although the risks are minimal, schools have a duty of care towards pupils, which means that pupils should remain unidentifiable and as such uncontactable when using images of pupils on web sites and in digital video. This is especially relevant for pupils under 16.
