Hertfordshire Ordnance Survey Maps
Introduction This exciting new Intranet application has been written
for us by The Advisory Unit: Computers in Education. Using the application you will be able to find Ordinance
Survey Landranger and Land-Line maps for anywhere in Hertfordshire.
The introductory pages in the Hertfordshire OS Maps service explain
how the service might be used, there is also a visual
walk-though below.
Installation of Aegis
ActiveX component
The first time you use Hertfordshire
Maps on a particular computer it will need to copy a small program
onto that computer. This will need to be done on each workstation
that the service is to be used on. This program will require this
serial number.
If you have a client/server network you may need to
seek advice from whomever provides you with network management support.
If you obtain network support from the Hertfordshire
School IT Systems Support team then they may be able to supply
you will an "installation" package which will reduce the
install time for you. Please contact Iain Gordon, email: iain.gordon@hertscc.gov.uk.

If you have not yet installed the
plugin, then once you reach the Land Line
section of the Hertfordshire OS Maps application this
program will start asking if you would like to install the
Aegis ActiveX control... |
...clicking Yes will
start the setup process which is similar to a normal software
installation... |
...except that at this point you will
need to give a serial number (available
from this page when you are within school )
and enter your name and the school you are in. |

On starting the Hertfordshire
OS Maps application a Copyright Statement is displayed.
Read this carefully,
it defines what you can and cannot use the map data for... |
...accepting the Copyright Statement
will display a list of options. Selecting Start here
with the Herts OS Map finder... |
...will display a overview
of Hertfordshire. Once you have selected the area
you wish to view and clicked on it... To copy these maps select
Copy and you can download the maps and use
them subject to the Licence Agreement. |
|
 |
 |
 |
...you will see the OS Landranger
maps for that area. To copy these maps select Copy
and you can download the maps and use them subject to the
Licence Agreement. |
Once you have clicked on an area of
the Landranger data, the available tiles of OS Land
Line data will be displayed. (Note:
this point and further on require the Aegis
Plugin to be installed - this will happen automatically
if you have not yet installed the plugin) |
The Land Line data has different 'layers'
of information, each can be turned off or
on, enabling you to view an area with only
the buildings... |
|
 |
 |
 |
...or only the roads and paths. |
It is also possible to zoom in on
an area by using the Zoom In button at the
top of the page... |
...you can zoom in
as far as you like... |
|
 |
 |
 |
...all the way in to building
level. |
At this scale (or at any scale in
the Land Line data) you can measure distances
between points on the map... |
...or measure areas and perimeters
of anything you choose. |
|
 |
 |
 |
Land Line data can also be copied
onto your computer's Clipboard... |
...and used in other programs such
as PowerPoint. |
Selecting Paste Special
from the Edit menu allows the map to be pasted as a Picture... |
|
 |
 |
 |
...which then appears in Powerpoint
as a 'grouped' picture. |
The slide can be appended
with text and other graphics... |
...and the the Pasted map can be ungrouped
and formatted to highlight certain objects. |
|
 |
 |
 |
Copied maps can also be used in Microsoft
Word... |
...using the same Paste Special
method... |
...will insert the map
into the document. |

ActiveX plugin (see above) to view the
Land Line maps and the Adobe
