What is E2BN?

The East of England Broadband Network (E2BN) is one of 10 Regional Broadband Consortia (RBCs) set up by the Government to help raise standards in teaching and learning by the use of broadband technology. It is a consortium of the local authorities in the east of England – including Hertfordshire.

E2BN aims to use the potential of ICT and broadband connectivity to provide services and resources to support and extend teaching and learning across the East of England region.

These include:

It is well worth exploring the E2BN website and going to their annual conference in the summer.

Video Conferencing & Multiclass

The E2BN site has a lot of advice and help with video conferencing. Much of this is on a separate micro site called multiclass (see below).

Multi Conference Unit

They also provide access to a multi conference unit (MCU). This is a piece of hardware that will allow you to set up video conferences with two or more other people.

The multiclass website is a directory and a source of information. Once you start using video-conferencing, it is worth registering with the multiclass directory. This will help you get in touch with other schools with similar interests and capabilities.

Framework Contract

In 2005, E2BN signed framework contracts with two companies who specialise in videoconferencing equipment. These make it easier and safer for you to buy video-conferencing hardware.

Music: Audio Network PLC and Freeplay Music

Audio Network PLC and Freeplay Music offer thousands of music clips which can be downloaded and used for free in schools for educational, non-commercial purposes.

Copyright laws prevent you from using most recorded music but with these resources you can access a whole library of music of different styles and lengths for use in podcasting, digital storytelling, video production, presentations etc. This represents a huge saving as on average tracks on the Audio Network cost £60 each.

Please note that you must be on a school computer to access the Audio Network PLC. Please read the terms of use for both these resources before using them.

Myths and Legends

Myths and LegendsThis site, launched at BETT 2006, allows children to build animated stories using an on-line Flash interface. The aim is to build a repository of myths and legends that have grown up around places in the East of England as well as to support pupil story telling and writing. The site  provides access to some free software which allows the generation of picture frame, recording of narration, adding sound effects and character voices, as well as uploading MP3 files
