Hertfordshire Design and Technology Week Activities
All Hertfordshire Schools were invited to join us in celebrating Design
and Technology week. A variety of events were held at Wheathampstead Development
Centre and Key Stage 2 Food Technology at a local technology college,
for children and young people in all key stages. Displays of Design and
Technology work from Foundation and Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4 were on
display in the main conference hall during the week providing the opportunity
for the pupils, staff and visitors to view the excellent work that has
been undertaken throughout the year. The programme of events included
the following:
Foundation & KS1: Run by early years specialists three
practical activities were enjoyed by the children. These included designing
and making puppets, paper engineering using levers and making a kaleidoscope.
The outcomes were outstanding, and the children all went back to school
with a quality product that they had enjoyed making.
Key Stage 2: Three different activities provided the opportunity
for the pupils to take part in Design and Technology for the day. Electronics
featured with the children designing and making flashing badges. In addition
an ICT consultant used Lego Robolab RCX to work with the pupils to develop
skills in control. A local Technology College provided the venue for a
group of 18 key stage 2 pupils to enjoy a day in the food technology room.
They worked extremely hard and completed four practical activities related
to the QCA scheme of work. The pupils enjoyed the fruits of their labours
for lunch and found the opportunity to work in a specialist environment
extremely useful. Thanks go to John F Kennedy school and its food technology
staff for their help.
Key Stage 3: An exciting day for key stage 3 pupils was lead
by Peter Grover and Andy Mitchell from Sheffield Hallam University together
with two final year PGCE students. The pupils made an electronic ‘Jitterbug’,
many of which had great character! This gave the pupils experience in
working with electronic components and systems.
A second day for key stage 3 pupils provided the opportunity for groups
to investigate Smart Foods (lead by Roy Ballam from The British Nutrition
Foundation), a variety of software including ProDesktop, Speedstep and
Interactive Food Facts. Nick Baldwin from the Technology Enhancement Project
ran a popular session that saw the children designing, making and testing
rockets.
Key Stage 4: The last day of the
week was the culmination of the Hertfordshire Crime Prevention Challenge.
The challenge was designed to support GCSE within Design and Technology
and also give the opportunity for pupils to gain a Crest Award.
This was a joint challenge with Hertfordshire Constabulary and The Welwyn
Hatfield Crime prevention Panel. The winners were presented with a cheque
and one for their school and a commemorative trophy. Some very innovative
projects were put forward for assessment and a very high standard of work
was praised by the assessment panel. Overall winner was Russell from Francis
Bacon School in St Albans.
Following the success of this year’s events and demand from schools
we will be offering a similar programme next year. We look forward to
offering the pupils of Hertfordshire more exciting opportunities to experience
Design and Technology and have fun!
