All Saints School Datchworth celebrated success in becoming the first primary school in the country to receive certificates for the Sainbury's Taste of Success Primary Food Awards. Inspired by teacher Rachel Bartlett the children in Year 1 and Year 3 carried out tasks and produced some exciting food products.

All the children received certificates recognising their success, which were presented by Roy Ballam, senior education officer from the British Nutrition Foundation.

Pupils at Lakeside School in Welwyn Garden City also undertook tasks from the award scheme and enjoyed eating the outcomes of their hard work! Roy presented the pupils with their certificates at a school assembly. Teacher Tanis Lang said they had all enjoyed the work and it was an excellent way of celebrating success with the pupils.

What is the Sainsbury's Taste of Success Award?

The Food Awards are focused around the successful completion of a practical food task by children aged 5-11. the tasks are supported with education resources developed by Sainsbury's, the Design and Technology Association (DATA) and the British Nutrition foundation (BNF). The scheme is welcomed by the the DfES.

The emphasis of the food awards scheme is on practical food skills. In essence, the Food Awards encourage good practical work with food in the primary classroom. Children are rewarded for work that they undertake through the formal curriculum. the emphasis of the Food Awards is to recognise and reward excellent work already going on in schools - not to create additional paperwork or overload teachers with yet another initiative.

For each successful task finished, children receive a certificate indicating that they have completed one of four food tasks, i.e. fruit and vegetables, sandwiches, biscuits or bread. A general certificate is also available for food projects that are not based around these four specialist tasks.

The Food Awards reward and recognise pupil's hard work - through what has to be taught in school. In addition, on-line resources to support teaching are available at:
