Who can enter?

All Art & Design and Design and Technology students at Key Stage 4 in Hertfordshire schools. Only one entry is allowed per student but subject to this restriction, there is no limit to the number of entries within a school.

What to enter?

The Hertfordshire Woodland Challenge would like you to design and make an item of environmentally friendly 'furniture' suitable for an internal or external public space.

Your final design:

  • should predominantly (mainly) be made from wood or wood products that have ideally been obtained from a reliable sustainable source.

  • the design must incorporate the appropriate use of materials and demonstrate a combination of aesthetics, functionality and strong environmental credentials.

  • very large items may be constructed as fully functioning scale replicas.

Your piece of furniture could be anything from seating to an architectural feature.

All entrants in the Challenge will be required to make a short (max. 5 mins.) oral presentation of their project to the judges at each stage of judging for which their project qualifies. Flip charts, OHPs and LCD projectors for PowerPoint presentations will be provided. If you wish to use other equipment, you should check availability well in advance and you may be required to provide it yourself.

Projects must have been started between September 2003 and March 2004.

Projects may be part of your examination coursework for either a recognised GCSE in Art and Design, Design and Technology or for a GNVQ in either Manufacturing or Engineering. It is expected that projects will be registered for the CREST (Creativity in Engineering Science and Technology) Award. CREST is a nationally recognised award promoted by the British Association for the Advancement of Science and accessed locally through your SATRO (Science and Technology Regional Organisation).

The CREST scheme is unique in that it accredits projects that are supported by external organisations. The aim of CREST is to encourage contextual learning. CREST is non-competitive.

The Challenge, "Wood by Design" provides all the elements to enable you to achieve a CREST award at silver level. For this you need to:

  • Provide a solution to a real technology problem

  • Have the support of a mentor

  • Invest a minimum of 40 hours

  • Record your work

  • Communicate your project to others

  • Demonstrate creativity, perseverance and application of knowledge in technology

Entering your project for a CREST award will not entail additional work for you (or your teacher).

Managing your project

All entrants will be required to submit a design folder that includes the following:

  • Identification of a problem
  • Relevant research into:
    • sustainable forest management,
    • the properties of wood and wood products
    • market research
    • timber processing
  • Analysis of research
  • A design specification
  • Your initial ideas
  • Your development of a final idea
  • Working drawings
  • Costings
  • Assessment of commercial viability
  • A diary of the project's development
  • Design evaluation

Protecting your idea

If you're developing a new idea, beware of imitators. A marketable invention could be eligible for a patent. To qualify, an invention must be new, involve an inventive step and be capable of industrial application.

Judging

Judging Criteria

  • Projects will be judged against six criteria:

    • Function/practicality

    • Appropriate use of materials and technology

    • Consideration of environmental issues

    • Commercial viability

    • Aesthetics

    • Health and Safety

  • Oral presentations should be rehearsed.

  • Absentee entrants cannot be judged.

Cautionary Note: Complexity will NOT be a criterion.

Judging

It is intended that all judging, except the first round in schools, will take place on 23 June 2004 at the Wheathampstead Development Centre. If there are too many entries to permit this, the quarter finals will be judged earlier, at several venues in the County, time and place to be advised.

  • Schools
Each school will judge the entries of its own students and send forward the best one to the next round of judging. Judging that takes place beyond the school level will be carried out by a panel of relevant experts.
  • County Final
Judges will choose the Outright Winner of the Challenge during National Design and Technology week.

Awards

All entrants will receive a certificate recording their participation in the Challenge. Certificates will also be awarded to those qualifying, in each category, as Best in School, Runners-up, and Outright Winner of the Challenge.

All entrants whose projects are entered for and achieve a CREST Award will have their CREST registration fee paid for them. Entrants who achieve the level of Best in School and meet the necessary CREST award standards will be awarded their certificate on finals day.

The outright winner will receive a cheque for £100 and his/her school will receive design and technology software to the value of £500, together with a commemorative plaque.

The Runners-up will each receive a cheque for £50 and their schools will receive design and technology software to the value of £250, together with a commemorative plaque.

During their visit the four finalists will each make a presentation of their project to experts and be able to discuss it with them.
