Hertfordshire 14-19 Online Prospectus

Hertschoices - Update on Progress

Hertschoices (www.hertschoices.org.uk), the 14-19 on-line prospectus has now received nearly 20,000 hits since its launch!  The website is constantly being developed to improve the service and information that it provides users.  New developments include:

  • a new Apprenticeship section of the website which allows users to email requests for further information directly to those work based learning providers that offer Apprenticeships across Hertfordshire;
  • an ‘intuitive’ word search in the course section so that if users type in a word that doesn’t appear in a course title such as ‘gardening’ alternative words such as horticulture or landscape are suggested as alternatives
  • the Diploma section of the website is currently being developed and it is hoped that this will go ‘live’ shortly.  This section will have information on courses offered including levels, progression and learning content, FAQs, and links to useful websites and labour market information.

All websites are only useful if the information or data is accurate and up-to-date.  Every provider was offered the opportunity to have training on how to input/amend data for their section of the website during academic year 2006-07.  An update training session is being held on Wednesday 30th April.  To book a place, please click here:

New Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Tools - ‘hertsahead’ and ‘hertschoices’

The Government’s White Paper, ‘Higher Standards, Better Standards for All’ (pdf) published in October 2005 and the 14-19 Implementation Plan (pdf) outlined that local authorities and local learning and skills councils (LLSCs) are expected to produce a 14-19 on-line prospectus by autumn 2007.

‘hertschoices’  (www.hertschoices.org.uk), the new on-line 14-19 prospectus is a searchable internet-based source of information on the courses and programmes that each Hertfordshire school, college and other provider wishes to offer young  people.

Hertfordshire’s 14-19 Strategy has as one of its key priorities the need to make clear and comprehensive information available to young people and their parents on the full range of 14-19 opportunities available across Hertfordshire together with the range of progression routes.

‘hertschoices’ will fulfil and meet this objective as it ensures that all providers’ 14-19 curriculum offer is transparent.  Young people are able to make informed choices about options that are available to them and to progress along the right learning pathways.  The prospectus will become an integral part of the available information, advice and guidance (IAG) provision for young people.

Information can be accessed by course, by level including next steps, by provider and by location. Links to useful websites are also available.

hertschoices’ is also liked to‘hertsahead’ (www.hertsahead.co.uk), a website allowing users to look at progression routes in education using their favourite subjects or to get them to a specific career goal they are aiming for.  The two sites will work together to allow users to plan and choose options at school, access a range of courses, and explore their options.  Hertsahead is being funded by Aimhigher in Hertfordshire – inspiring young people in Hertfordshire to continue and succeed in education.
