St Albans City & District Council support
new Green Leaders Programme
In November, we hosted the first Green Leaders Training
Event in St Albans Council Chamber. This was attended by
teams of Sixth Form students from 8 of the secondary schools
in St Albans and Harpenden.
The aim of Green Leaders is to
train a pool of Sixth Form students that can organise and
deliver assemblies to schools in St Albans and District on
sustainability themes. At the training event the Green
Leaders reflected on
what makes a good
assembly, considered ideas for the kinds of activities they could
do in an assembly and had a go at planning and delivering an
assembly on a sustainability theme.
Each secondary school has
now been matched up to 2 or 3 other schools where they will
deliver an assembly during this school year. The team of Green
Leaders from Beaumont School has already delivered one of
their assemblies in Maple Primary School. See page 4 for more
Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme
The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) is a new mandatory carbon emissions trading scheme, which started in April 2010 that aims to increase energy efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the UK.
The CRC will have financial and legal implications for local authorities and most schools in the UK.
Free Secondary Learning Programme: Make the Link Climate Exchange
The Citizenship Foundation and Plan UK are launching a new programme in September 2010 – Make the Link Climate exChange - placing UK secondary schools in the centre of the Climate Change debate through learning, dialogue and action.
They are looking for schools who want free teacher resources on climate change aligned with KS3 & KS4 curricula in Geography, Citizenship, ICT, Languages and Media Studies. Young people will be able to connect through an interactive website with African and European countries to encourage debate and learning about the direct impact of climate change. They will also be trained in leading their own campaigns.
