Middle Leadership Development

Just as research and inspection evidence reveals the close correlation between the quality of leadership and the quality of teaching, so it recognises that leadership does not reside solely in the headteacher, or indeed, the Leadership team.

Subject leaders and others with posts of responsibility have a pivotal part to play in the quality of leadership, teaching and pupil achievement in schools.

There is a set of National Standards for subject leaders and development programmes for middle managers are also likely to be a National priority. We want to ensure that Hertfordshire middle managers have maximum opportunity for self-development and team development.

Some specific leadership activities are ongoing or planned and the provision of further opportunities for middle managers will be a priority within the Hertfordshire Leadership Strategy.

Growing into Leadership

Hertfordshire has arranged for the Eastern Leadership Centre (ELC) to run one of their successful programmes exclusively for Hertfordshire teachers.

Who is it for?
Growing into Leadership is a leadership development programme designed to meet the varying needs of those in, or aspiring towards, senior leadership positions, but who are not yet ready for headship.

The Programme
The programme modules are built around the National Standards for School Leadership and aims to help participants build essential leadership skills as they develop in their leadership role. A series of six one-day modules examines many of the essential elements of leadership, participants can select modules to match their personal development needs.

Day Conferences for Subject Leaders

These conferences are held annually. Organised by the relevant subject adviser, they focus on important current issues for subject leaders and frequently include inputs from national figures, as well as opportunities to share good practice.
