NGA's Purpose, Values and Vision
The National Governor's Association is
a membership organisation run by governors for governors. We
recognise the high quality of the services provided by LEAs for
their governors and offer a service which complements that provided
by Hertfordshire LEA.
NGA’s Purpose or ‘Why are we here?’
NGA’s core purpose is to enable governors to play
their part in promoting the best possible education for all pupils
in schools.
It does this by:
- providing a quality service to its members
At present this is done through Governors’ News, the
NGA Papers, local associations, the Web page, and an efficient
and helpful office staff.
- representing the governors’ view
and campaigning on behalf of governors.
NGA currently provides
representation on national and local forums, consults its
members, uses its own and others’ research
results, uses its own knowledge, expertise and networks, responds
to consultation, addresses conferences,
writes for a variety of publications and takes up, with decision-makers,
issues of concern to governors.
Peripheral business also underpins the core purpose. This involves
joint projects and liaison with other individuals and groups,
including membership of the Governorline Management Board
and the sale of NGA products eg Smartcards.
NGA’s underlying values are:
- Striving for excellence - having a culture of continuous
improvement
- Integrity - doing the right thing not the most expedient
Independence - accountable for its core purpose to its members
alone
- Co-operation - working with other governor organisations
and relevant bodies
- Benevolence/selflessness - working for
the common good
- Innovation - having an orientation towards change
- Courage
- being unafraid of taking risks
- Optimism - persistence in spite
of setbacks
- Respect – valuing people and their different
perspectives.
These overlap somewhat with Nolan’s standards in public
life but also go beyond them.
NGA’s objectives are to:
- improve and increase its services to members
- be a highly
valued partner in the development of education
- make itself
a model of good governance.
