Your Child Protection School Liaison Officer

Each Area has two Child Protection School Liaison Officers (CPSLO) who are part of the Child Protection Unit of Children Schools and Families based at County Hall, Hertford.

The CPSLOs are there to enhance the ability of schools to provide good Child Protection practice and process, as required by the Hertfordshire Safeguarding Children Board Child Protection Procedures 2007, the Education Act 2002, and other guidance.

Their specific tasks include:

  • Devising and delivering specialist training to whole school groups, to DSPs, Head Teachers and Governors.
  • Monitoring Child Protection practice in Hertfordshire schools and contributing to the School Review Meetings.
  • Offering advice, support and guidance to individual schools on all matters related to Child Protection, including a “pre-Ofsted” evaluation service.
  • Encouraging schools to take an active role in child protection
including attendance at Child Protection Conferences and Core Group
    Meetings.
  • Attending Strategy meetings that relate to allegations against a member of school staff, in the company of the Head Teacher.
  • Working closely with schools to develop Risk Assessment & Management Plans pertaining to pupils or adults who may pose a risk to others.

The role is interpreted by the team as wide-ranging and supportive, and covers minor concerns and queries, as well as very serious matters. However, to be fully effective, it requires schools to understand what is offered and to make use of it.

Experience shows that schools who make use of their CPSLO find that having a person whose only task is Child Protection and Schools to be very helpful, both directly and in the liaison with the Area teams.
