Hertfordshire Gardens Trust

Hertfordshire Gardens Trust is an organisation that makes a difference in both the historic environment and in environmental education. We work in partnership with English Heritage, The Garden History Society, The Royal Horticultural Society and Hertfordshire County Council – both the Environment Department and Children, Schools and Families.

Our achievements include:-

  • research and survey of historic parks and gardens in the east, west and mid-Hertfordshire leading to five publications
  • practical classroom workshops on growing things to eat, a small grants scheme and advice and guidance on developing their grounds to over 300 schools
  • a professionally trained conservation team, working alongside English Heritage and The Garden History Society, giving relevant and comprehensive advice on the preservation of our historic parks and gardens to owners, developers and local authorities and identifying the national, regional and local significance of sites.

Every project we support must have the active involvement of pupils right through from early ideas to how best to maintain the garden. Headteachers tell us this has helped bring about a school ethos of care, ownership and responsibility.

Our programmes for schools include Wheelbarrow Workshops, a School Grounds Awards Scheme, Garden Information Sheets, site visits and talks, all operated through a team of dedicated volunteers, hand-picked for their expertise and experience in landscape and garden design, teaching and school governorship.
