NQT Induction Tutors' Newsletter - Spring 2010

'Get the first year right and help improve recruitment and retention of NQTs in Hertfordshire'.

Second Assessment (Grade A/B)

The second assessment is now due and should be submitted no later than 1st April 2010. Please complete the assessment forms online, giving your NQTs an opportunity to add their comments before submitting them. If you have any technical problems with the website please call our website support on 01622 834866. Any other queries please call Anne Pearson, NQT Co-ordinator on 01438 844755.

Cause for Concern

Are you concerned that your NQT is not making sufficient progress and unsure how to reflect this?

1. You need to consider whether your NQT, at the current rate of progress, is likely to meet the core standards by the end of their induction period. If you feel they “may not be able to meet the Core Standards” please indicate this on the assessment form and follow it up with a letter from the Headteacher indicating that the NQT is at risk of failing to complete their induction satisfactorily. A copy of this letter needs to be enclosed with a signed copy of the assessment and sent to the NQT office.

2. Should you grade the NQT C or D?

Is your NQT responding to support and showing some signs of improvement? Is your NQT meeting the short term targets they have been set? Is it likely that your NQT will be able to work independently by the end of next term?
If the answers to these questions would be “Yes” we would suggest a C grade is fair. If you are in doubt then a D grade is probably more appropriate.

Please send in signed paper copies of C/D grade assessments.

NQT Registration

New Starters Easter Term:
Please register any new NQTs starting after Easter as soon as possible. (See details below regarding twilight session on 27th April.)

Autumn Term 2010:
NQTs starting induction in September 2010 can now be registered online following appointment. Induction tutors and Secondary Co-ordinators will be sent their handbooks in time for the start of the Autumn Term but NQTs will receive their handbooks at the core training sessions or thereafter.

Online System Reminders!
  1. Please ensure your e-mail addresses are up to date. These should be your personal school e-mail addresses.
  2. NQT Induction Co-ordinators have access to username/password details for all their induction tutors.
  3. Once an assessment has been completed online please ensure it is submitted to the LA. If your NQT chooses not to add any comments (and we would ask that you encourage them to do so) the “I have no comments to make” box needs to be ticked before the assessment can be submitted.
  4. Please send in signed paper copies of final assessments.
Interim Assessments

It is essential that Interim assessments are only submitted for NQTs leaving your school part way through their second or third terms of induction. This is to ensure that the NQT’s progress and performance since the last assessment is recorded and for those NQTs completing less than two terms the time will count towards their induction.

If you have any problems accessing an interim report please call Anne Pearson on 01438 844755.

Supply Teachers Undertaking Inductions

A supply teacher on a contract of one term or more should be treated in the same way as a permanent employee for the purposes of NQT induction. There should therefore be no distinction between the support for an NQT employed through a conventional contract and for one who is employed for a term or more from a supply agency.

Masters in Teaching & Learning (MTL)

The MTL, a Masters award that has been developed to extend knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities in teaching, is being fully funded by the TDA. This is a new national initiative but this year places in Hertfordshire have only been offered to NQTs and New Heads of Department in National Challenge Schools.

The University of Hertfordshire and other providers continue to offer various programmes, open to NQTs, which can lead to a Masters.

SEN Toolkit

The TDA has produced an SEN toolkit designed to help beginner teachers learn more about teaching pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Available through the TDA website, your NQT may find it helpful:

And Finally ......

Thank you to all Induction Tutors for your hard work over the past terms. Supporting new entrants to the job is a vital and important responsibility.
