National Association of Professional Teaching Assistants (NAPTA)

Identifying and meeting the training needs of teaching assistants is becoming ever more important as their role becomes more complex.  The National Association of Professional Teaching Assistants (NAPTA) has developed a Professional Development Review, a computer-based self-assessment tool that highlights teaching assistants’ strengths and any areas that they feel would benefit from professional development.

The four strands contained in the questionnaire are:

  • The National Occupational Standards for Teaching Assistants
  • The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) for Teaching Assistants at Levels 2 and 3
  • The Professional Standards for Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status
  • The underlying skills required to undertake any of the National Workload Agreement’s 21 tasks.

We are now able to offer the following service to all schools:

  • A visit to the school by a Leading Teaching Assistant who will administer the questionnaire with your teaching assistants and/or support staff (each member of staff  will need use of a computer for this).
  • A detailed report from NAPTA for each Teaching Assistant and an aggregated report for the school.  This will be delivered to the headteacher or nominated representative at a feedback session.
  • To support schools in meeting some of the training needs of their teaching assistants following the NAPTA profile, we will provide a copy of the NAPTA toolkit. This is an extensive collection of CD based resources. Further details will be available at the feedback session when schools collect their reports.

The total charge to schools for this will be £10 per teaching assistant.  The NAPTA Professional Development Review is an excellent first step in ensuring that “support staff have the appropriate skills, experience and knowledge to carry out their enhanced duties.”  (Ofsted guidance to inspectors).

We believe that this will enable both schools and Children, Schools and Families to target professional development more effectively.
