CPD Leaders' NewsletterSummer 2008Welcome to the Summer Term Issue of the CPD Leaders' Newsletter. In this issue you will find: - The latest information about Performance Management and CPD Leadership - New initiatives from the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) and the Eastern Leadership Centre (ELC) - Information on the Training and Learning Research Programme (TLRP) Tasters from CUREE - Contact details and links to a variety of useful websites
CPD Leadership in Primary SchoolsYou may remember from the last newsletter that we invited a senior leader in a primary ‘hub school’ to work on the development of CPD Leadership for all school staff in conjunction with the other primary schools in his/her cluster. Janet Packer, Deputy Head at de Havilland School in Hatfield took up our invitation. She has conducted interviews with other schools and issued a questionnaire to ascertain views. She has also begun work on an extremely valuable resource - a framework for performance management of all support staff linked to relevant occupational standards. The report on her findings so far and the framework will be available on HGfL shortly—keep an eye on the home page for further details. We are keen to hear from other primary schools for whom CPD leadership is an issue and would very much welcome more members to join the CPD Leaders’ reference group. Please contact me—or one of the group members—if you would like more information. Their details are listed below. Performance Management—Heading into the Next CyclePlease do contact me if you have any outstanding issues with regard to teachers’ performance management - or if anyone in your school is new in post and unsure about the revised regulations. I will be running half-day courses in the autumn term, at Stevenage on: ‘New to Performance Management?’ A half-day course for those who have recently taken over responsibility as reviewers. This would also be suitable for new Heads or members of the Senior Leadership Team. For further details about the course, look out for flyers or see the HGfL. If you would like more ‘bespoke’ training for your reviewers, a general staff briefing or a one-to-one discussion about Performance Management—or any aspect of CPD, please contact me on 01438 843993 or email ruth.alinek@hertscc.gov.uk Performance Management—for Support StaffMaggie Miller, our Support Staff Training and Development Co-ordinator, is finalising a booklet of resources for support staff performance management which will be sent out to all schools in the autumn term. If you would like advice on setting up a scheme or on adapting a scheme you are currently using, do contact her on 01438 843085. Don’t forget that the ‘PRS Resources’, available on HGfL, contain very useful documentation on support staff performance management. Also on HGfL, you will find a number of examples of schemes used by Hertfordshire schools. Follow the links from the ‘support staff’ pages which are under the schoolworkforce tab on the grid. Learn East—A Regional CPD WebsiteYou may already be familiar with the CPD Leadership resource on the TDA website. It gives details of resources, materials, toolkits etc. produced by LAs across the country. Now TDA in conjunction with the ELC (Eastern Leadership Centre) are looking to set up an Eastern region website. The aim is to give you a ‘one-stop shop’ approach for resources, courses, events etc. relating to CPD across the Eastern region. The website will also provide answers to questions commonly asked by those who want to begin working in schools such as, ‘How do I get a GTP school?’ or ‘which qualification would be best for me as a Finance Manager?’ Because much of this information is already available to Hertfordshire schools via HGfL, we plan to ‘link’ this to the new ‘Learn East’ website. We’re also working with two of the County’s Training Schools, Nobel and Sir John Lawes, on this project. Both schools will develop their own training school websites and make them more accessible to schools in their local communities. These will then link to HGfL and so to the ‘Learn East’ website. Look out for more information next term. CPD Leadership—Phase 3Regular readers of this newsletter will know that we have been involved in a number of projects working with TDA to develop support and guidance for CPD leaders and leadership in schools. As a result, and thanks to the hard work of a number of schools, we now have a much greater ‘bank’ of ideas and resources which you can access on HGfL. In particular, we have focussed on materials to support teachers’ performance management and support staff development. Phase 3 of the project, which will begin in the autumn term, seeks to ‘embed’ the outcomes in as many schools as possible. This means there will be some funds to enable us to support schools in using the materials already developed and to extend our ‘network’ of CPD leaders’ groups. If your school is interested in hosting a meeting of CPD leaders in your area please contact me. We I’d also like to hear from you if:
Early Professional DevelopmentThe TDA now has a dedicated website to support and develop teachers in the early years of their career. TDA research has shown that priority areas for development for many teachers in their second and third years include:
Other research (NFER, OFSTED) has revealed that the Early Professional Development (EPD) benefits for both teachers and schools are:
The site www.tda.gov.uk/epdguidance provides practical advice and ideas on raising confidence and on retention, on the broadening of subject knowledge and support for emerging leaders. Additional information for those supporting teachers can be found on www.tda.gov.uk/epdsupport. I’d be very pleased to hear about your school’s good practice in providing CPD opportunities for teachers in their second and third years. Useful WebsitesDon’t forget, you can find a wealth of useful CPD resources by accessing the following links: The TDA website: The General Teaching Council and especially its ‘Connect’ network Teachers’ TV: Teachernet: The Hertfordshire Grid for Learning (HGfL): TLRP TastersThe Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education (CUREE) has created for the Teaching & Learning Research programe (TLRP) a series of reflective activities that teachers can use to answer a number of questions including: Social Contexts - People How can we encourage children to draw on their parents' knowledge of solving maths problems? What advice should we give parents on whether and how they should correct their children's reading? What everyday opportunities for helping children develop their literacy can we point out to parents? Values and Identity - Knowing the Children as Pupils How can we develop children's understanding of literacy by drawing on their knowledge of popular culture? How do teachers monitor and evaluate strategies using pupil voice? What learning at home beyond the school curriculum can we encourage? Values and Identity - Knowing ourselves as teachers Why and how can we make our pupils ready to learn independently? What can we do to overcome the challenges of embedding assessment for learning (AfL) fully? To find the full-research teasters and reflective activities that help teachers answer these questions and more visit their website below or view the flyer for more information:
