Irfanview
What is Irfanview?
Irfanview is a (free) piece of software for Windows PCs which is very
useful for working with digital images. If you use a digital
camera or scanner, Irfanview is a fast and useful alternative to the software which
is often 'bundled' with such equipment.
When you first run Irfanview it appears to be very simple, but don't
be fooled, it is a very powerful program which can do almost anything
you need to an existing digital image. Irfanview is used in
the HGfL Inset courses on school web
sites.
What can I do with Irfanview?
Using Irfanview you can do lots
of things with your digital images:
- resize your images to a size more useful for viewing on web pages
- easily view a series of images in a folder without having to select File
> Open each time
- open and convert almost any
image format to GIF
or JPEG format so that it can be
viewed on a web page
- change the contrast, brightness, colour depth of an image as well
as apply filters
- rotate, crop, scan (if you have a scanner connected to your PC),
perform a screen capture and print images
- you can also run these as 'batch commands' - i.e. you could resize,
rotate, and apply a filter to dozens of images at once
Other non-web-related features are:
- create your own Windows screen saver from your images
- easily print images
- view 'thumbnails' of all the images in one folder
