Schools are legally responsible for securing access to independent and impartial careers guidance for all pupils in Years 8-13. The statutory duty assumes that careers guidance consists of services and programmes intended to assist pupils to make and implement education, training and occupation choices and to learn how to manage their careers. Careers guidance secured under the duty must also include information on all 16- 18 education or training options, including apprenticeships.
YC Hertfordshire will support you to achieve this with our new combined Careers Education Information Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) and work-related learning offer.

Youth Support Worker NCS programme 2017
Are you or anyone you know over 20 years old and looking for a job during the summer?
Do you have experience of working with young people and an interest in helping them to develop their skills and confidence?
YC Hertfordshire is delivering the National Citizen Service (NCS) during Summer 2017 across the county.
NCS offers young people aged 16-17 (to 24 for those with a learning disability) the opportunity to develop the skills, confidence and attitudes to support them in engaging with their local community and volunteer in a social action project.
We require youth support workers to assist in the delivery of the programme who are able to commit to a minimum of 4 consecutive weeks. The first 2 weeks of the programme are residential and you must reside at the venue for the two consecutive Monday – Fridays. Accommodation is provided free of charge during this time.
We are looking for highly motivated and energetic individuals with experience of working with young people. The role will involve supporting young people to develop personal and social skills through residentials and social action programmes, enabling them to grow in confidence and gain resilience.
The programme for 2017 will be running from 26 June until 25 August.

YC Hertfordshire working with school schools and colleges to prepare young people for the world of work
Enhancing employability, encouraging young people to explore a variety of career options and providing individual action plans are just some of the ways YC Hertfordshire provides support through its portfolio of services to schools and colleges.
Already working in over 100 Hertfordshire learning and community settings, YC Hertfordshire provides impartial information, advice, guidance, youth work, work related learning, outdoor education opportunities and personal and social development programmes for young people including specific programmes focusing on prevention and early intervention.

Hertfordshire primary school students are Rocketing into the Future
YC Hertfordshire primary school careers programme ‘Rocket into the Future’ supports schools in ensuring their students are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of future life including secondary school.
Over 30 schools across Hertfordshire have now taken part in Rocket into the Future workshops. There is a variety of sessions on offer for schools to choose from. The Grange Primary School in Letchworth commissioned Youth Connexions to run 24 workshops across Year 5 and 6 classes. These involved many different activities, including team-building tasks, communication skills sessions and creative exercises. Talks from employers enhanced the programme and students explored what skills are important for future jobs. A student from the school said: “I have learnt what I need to be good at to achieve what I want to be in the future”.
Flamsted End Primary School in Cheshunt chose the ‘Total Eclipse’ module which helps to prepare Year 6 students for their transition to secondary school. Their teacher commented “The session was excellent in preparing the children for their upcoming move to secondary school.” Students felt ready as a result and one student said “I liked the activities because they helped me feel positive about transition.”
Other schools chose modules such as ‘Landing and Exploration’ where students look at how academic subjects relate to the world of work and what subjects might be important for certain jobs and careers in the future. Year 6 students at Ralph Sadleir Middle School in Puckeridge learnt about the importance of their core subjects. One of them said: “I have learnt that maths, English and science are very important for most jobs.”
Edwinstree Middle School in Buntingford selected the ‘Rocket Girl’ session for their Year 5 and 6 students. This involves challenging gender stereotyping associated with certain career pathways. ‘Reach for the Sky’, a session looking at aspirations is also a favourite amongst students and staff. A Year 6 student from Hobletts Manor Junior School, Hemel Hempstead, commented “I enjoyed making the dream board, and learning about aspirations because it motivated me to work hard to get to the place I want to be”.
The ‘Shooting Stars’ session gives students a glimpse into the world of work by including a visit from a ‘mystery guest’. Students are tasked with guessing the guest’s job. The guest is then invited to talk about their role and the company they work for, which is usually local to the primary school. A Year 6 teacher from St Bernadette Primary School in London Colney commented “It was a very interactive session, very clear and related well to the children. Sessions were well planned and delivered with excellent examples, the mystery guest is a fantastic idea”.

The Careers & Enterprise Company: shaping the next generation
The Careers & Enterprise Company is an exciting new programme aimed at forging closer ties between schools and employers across the county.
At its heart are local employers who act as mentors to schools/colleges by working with senior leadership teams to help connect the curriculum to future work opportunities, provide access to workplaces and act as relatable role models to young people.
To date we have more than 40 schools signed up to the programme with conversations taking place with a further 15 schools over the coming weeks.
We are currently in the process of matching schools to employers as more and more employers come on board as Enterprise Advisers all the time.
Thanks to its success so far the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and The Careers & Enterprise Company have confirmed funding to support the costs of Enterprise Co-ordinators to 2017. This means that Enterprise Co-ordinators can continue to broker effective and lasting relationships between schools and employers.

YC Hertfordshire has launched the most comprehensive ever portfolio of services
The Ofsted expectation regarding overall effectiveness in order for a school to be outstanding is that: ‘Pupils and particular groups of pupils have excellent educational experiences at school and these ensure that they are very well equipped for the next stage of their education, training or employment.’

Feedback affirms that young people value YC Hertfordshire advice and guidance
Youth Connexions carries out regular surveys to gain feedback from young people about the services they receive. The most recent study asked 1,000 young people who received independent and impartial advice or guidance to rate their experience.
National quality standard achieved by YC Hertfordshire
YC Hertfordshire has been judged as showing “passion, commitment, innovation and imagination” in work with young people.
The Matrix Standard is a national quality standard which assesses services that support individuals in their choice of career, learning, work and life goals.
YC Hertfordshire has been re-accredited for the Matrix Standard after a rigorous week-long assessment that examined the services provided to young people through information, advice, careers guidance and work-related learning. YC Hertfordshire successfully demonstrated that they follow robust processes, promote continuous improvement and that staff professionalism and development is one of the highest priorities.
The assessor’s report said the service had embedded innovation and imagination throughout delivery and highlighted other areas of particular strength. Read more here
Herts Vote 2016: Young people have spoken!
At the start of 2016, YC Hertfordshire enabled young people across the county to take part in their annual vote for the top issues and for the representatives who will campaign for change.Candidates set out their manifestos online and canvassed in schools, colleges and youth projects during December and January; voting took place in late January and early February. Each elected MYP will represent one of the ten districts for the year, until February 2017.
The top five issues will now form the Herts1125 Hertfordshire Young People’s Manifesto 2016/17, and are:
Bullying; all forms of bullying (verbal, physical, cyber, etc.) should be treated equally and support should be available when required for victims of bullying.
Mental health and general wellbeing; continue the work from 2014 Manifesto to improve services and support available for young people’s mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Body confidence and self-image; impact of social media trends, recognising the signs and symptoms of eating disorders and self-harm.
Equality in Herts: Equal rights should be promoted and discrimination actively tackled.
Access to health services; all young people should know their rights regarding confidentiality, support and access for both mental health and physical health services.
The Members of Youth Parliament will consult with young people across the county during May- July to find out their opinions on these issues and the changes that they would like to see made. The results will be collated and published in the Herts1125 Hertfordshire Young People’s Manifesto 2016/17 that will be launched and presented to senior members in October 2016.

Delivered by YC Hertfordshire, National Citizen Service (NCS) is an unforgettable life experience that reaches beyond school and is something which employers look for. Not only is NCS good fun, it’s a challenging, personal and social development programme which helps young people in School Years 11 and 12 to build independence and confidence.
