Work Experience Record Book

work experience record bookStudent Work Experience Record Book - Tutor Support

Introduction The Student Record Book has been designed to help young people plan to get the most out of work experience by encouraging them to think about what it is they want to achieve during the placement. Work experience time is about moving the young people’s learning from the classroom into the work place so they can:

  • Learn more about themselves
  • Learn about the world of work
  • Gain in self-confidence
  • Understand how important key skills are to employers
  • Make sense of their schoolwork
  • Work with people of different age groups

Young people with your support could use this book to prepare for the placement, to record the activities during the placement and to act as a stimulus for recognising the learning that has taken place. These principles are embedded within Progress File upon which much of this book has been based.

Personal Evaluation Form

Ways of introducing the Student Record Book to young people Accessing the materials: Pages 1, 4, 6-7, 11, 13-15* [See Be Safe Book*] need to be completed prior to the placement Pages 5, 8-10, 12, need to be completed before and again during the placement Pages 16-23 need to be completed during the placement Page 24-25 on completion and then electronically from school on the template and e-mailed to HCS at: wex.eval@herts-careers.co.uk

Many of the activities require the young people to think about their own situation and so the record book could be used as a self-directed pack. However if there is discrete time available in the curriculum for preparation then you might want to approach some of the activities differently. For example through class or paired discussion, through ranking ideas, videos, designing displays, making presentations, using a supportive employer, role play and so on.

It is important to stress that the Student Record Book does not replace a programme of Careers Education and Guidance to support Work Experience. It is a complimentary product focusing on student preparation, recording achievement, gathering evidence and evaluation.
