Text Factor
For the Text Factor event students from schools across Hertfordshire read the titles on the RHCBA “older readers” shortlist before coming together at Schools Library Service to discuss the books and vote for their favourite. Each year we invite a guest speaker to give a talk to participants. Recent guest speakers have included Marcus Sedgwick, Andy Stanton and Sally Prue. This year we were lucky enough to have as our speaker Ali Sparkes, winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year Award 2010 and author of many great books, including Frozen in time, Wishful thinking and the Shapeshifters series.
The three books on the 2011 shortlist – Trash by Andy Mulligan, The red pyramid by Rick Riordan and Time riders by Alex Scarrow – prompted much lively talk in the discussion groups. Everybody had a chance to vote for their favourite title and Ali Sparkes announced the results before signing books and posing for photos with the students. It was a close-run thing, with Trash and The red pyramid securing joint first place and Time riders missing out by a single vote.
