Picture a Story

Picture a StoryPicture a Story, our principal event for primary school age children, aims to involve children in telling a story through pictures. Before the day of the event, children read and explore a range of specially selected picture books in school. Different titles are chosen for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. There is also an optional art competition on a related theme.

The Picture a Story event usually takes place early in March. Participating schools send six children to join us for a morning or afternoon to take part in an Art Trail (which features art from the County Art Collection) relating to the books they have read, and enjoy a presentation about 'picturing a story' from our guest illustrator.  David’s Bookshop of Letchworth provides a bookshop for the day so that the children can buy books and have them signed. Past speakers have included James Mayhew, Chris Wormell, Emily Gravett, and Catherine Rayner.

This year our speaker was Jackie Morris, author of the wonderful Tell me a dragon, who gave a magic-themed presentation based on her book The ice bear.  The art competition was to design and make a picture or mask of any animal in the style of Jackie's The snow leopard, and the entries were, as always, of a very high standard. The winner in both KS1 and KS2 was awarded a signed copy of Tell me a dragon and the runners up received certificates.

This is a very popular event and was oversubscribed this year. Comments received afterwards included

"It was a fab event -great opportunity for children to experience different forms of art as well as meeting a real life artist"

"Thoroughly enjoyed it - perfectly pitched!"
